As Quantity Surveyor Engineer within CHEC South Africa, you will join our commercial team and support large-scale EPC infrastructure development projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing cost estimation, contract administration, financial control, and commercial reporting across the full project lifecycle. This role plays a critical function in safeguarding project profitability, ensuring contractual compliance, and supporting strategic decision-making through accurate and timely commercial insights.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  1. Cost Estimation & Tendering
    • Prepare, review, and manage cost estimates, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and assist in preparing tender documents, including Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and bid packages.
    • Evaluate unit rates, variations, and claims, and support negotiations and settlements.
  2. Cost Control & Reporting
    • Perform accurate cost estimation, planning and validation, ensuring reliable forecasting and verification of project budgets and expenditures, and value engineering to optimize project costs.
    • Maintain and update project cost reports to ensure alignment with budgets. Maintain organized records of all cost and quantity documentation.
    • Prepare cost reports and commercial updates for management and client stakeholders. Prepare progress reports and participate in project meetings.
  3. Contract & Commercial Management
    • Assist in contract administration, including preparing contract variations, claims, valuations, and supporting documentation.
    • Evaluate and certify monthly valuations, progress payments, and measurement reports submitted by contractors.
    • Ensure adherence to contractual and commercial terms in line with FIDIC or equivalent standards.
    • Support negotiations and settlements related to variations, claims, and commercial matters.
    • Analyze and evaluate subcontractor quotations and negotiate terms.
  4. Site Coordination & Measurement
    • Collaborate with site teams to verify quantities and ensure accurate field measurement records.
    • Conduct site visits to assess progress, validate work quantities, and ensure quality compliance.
    • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to ensure accurate cost tracking.
    • Ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings, and contractual requirements.
    • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior QS team members
  • Ad Hoc and Special Projects
    • Lead or support additional QS initiatives as required by management.
    • Duties as may be required from time to time in accordance with the Company's operational requirements.
Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience in construction within a multinational or large-scale organization.
  • Strong knowledge of measurement methods, FIDIC contracts, and international cost management standards, and cost control practices.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, CostX, Candy, or other recognized QS software.
  • Local expertise in supplier pricing, codes, and specifications, with the ability to identify cost-saving alternatives.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
