Primary Plant Design Engineer

Our client is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Primary Plant Design Engineer to join their engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, specification, and development of high-voltage primary plant equipment for substations and related infrastructure. You will play a key role in ensuring that projects are delivered safely, on time, and in line with industry standards.

Duties:
  • Develop and review designs for primary plant systems (HV equipment, busbars, disconnectors, earthing, etc.) for substations.
  • Prepare layout drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC/SANS standards, utility specifications, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with Civil, Secondary, and Protection Engineers to integrate designs.
  • Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and design validations.
  • Support Project Managers with technical input during tendering and project execution.
  • Provide technical guidance to Junior Engineers and Drafters.
  • Liaise with clients, utilities, and suppliers to ensure that the design intent is achieved.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in substation primary plant design (HV/MV).
  • Strong knowledge of HV equipment and substation layout design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD / MicroStation (or similar design tools).
  • Familiarity with local utility standards and IEC/SANS regulations.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and team collaboration skills.
  • ECSA registration (Pr Eng / Pr Tech Eng) or eligibility is advantageous.
