Responsibilities
The Senior Surveyor is responsible for leading and managing all surveying activities at the open cast mine, ensuring the accurate, reliable, and timely provision of survey data to support mine planning, production, and operational decision-making. This role is critical in maintaining the integrity of mine design, resource estimation, and operational efficiency, while ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and company standards. The Senior Surveyor provides leadership and guidance to junior survey staff, fosters a culture of safety and professionalism, and collaborates closely with engineers, mine planners, and management to optimize operations.
• BSc or B-Tech Mine Surveying
• Honours Degree in Surveying (advantageous).
• Mine Surveyor's Certificate of Competency (essential).
• Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
• Drone Pilot License (essential)
• Minimum of 5–7 years' relevant experience in an open cast mining environment.
• Strong knowledge of mine planning software and survey equipment (e.g., GPS, Total Station, CAD packages).
• Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
• Valid driver's licence
Advanced technical surveying skills in open-cast mine
operations, including setting out bench levels, pit limits, haul
roads, and stockpiles.
• Proficient with GPS, total stations, drones, and laser scanning for
mapping, monitoring, and data collection.
• Ability to process survey data, create 3D models, and generate
accurate mine plans.
• Perform volume calculations for stockpiles, pit excavations, and
production reconciliations.
• Skilled in CAD and GIS software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D) and survey
instruments/software (Leica, Trimble, Topcon).
• Experienced with mine planning software such as Surpac,
Mindsight, or Vulcan.
• Strong understanding of mine safety regulations, risk
assessments, and safe survey practices.
• Knowledge of environmental considerations including land
rehabilitation, water management, and operational impact.
• Plan and coordinate survey activities according to production
schedules.
• Liaise effectively with engineers, geologists, production
managers, and contractors.
• Supervise and mentor junior surveyors and field assistants.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to address surveying
challenges and recommend mine design adjustments.
• Clear communication skills for reporting survey results, mine
layout updates, and deviations to management.
• Prepare technical reports, maps, and presentations for
stakeholders.
• Knowledge of mining regulations, property boundaries, and
statutory reporting requirements.
• Attention to detail, leadership, teamwork, and adaptability in
dynamic mine environments.
