Role Overview:
The ESG & Impact Manager is responsible for implementing the Investment Fund's ESGMS and IMMS across the full investment cycle. The role oversees the development and execution of all ESG and Impact policies, standards, procedures, management systems, and reporting requirements, and manages the Fund's Impact Officer.
Working closely with the deal team, the ESG & Impact Manager ensures that ESG and Impact obligations are applied, monitored, and reported for each investment and portfolio company.
The role safeguards full compliance with the Fund's ESGMS, IMMS, and investor requirements, and supports the delivery of the Fund's overall ESG and Impact objectives.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
ESGMS & IMMS Implementation
- Lead development, integration, and continuous improvement of the Fund's ESGMS and IMMS.
- Implement ESG processes on behalf of all investors.
- Work with deal teams and portfolio companies to ensure effective due diligence, baseline data, and ongoing E&S compliance.
- Manage ESG & Impact workstreams (stakeholder engagement, grievances, measurement, reporting).
- Oversee ESG and Impact research and communicate performance internally and externally.
ESG & Impact Screening and Due Diligence
- Conduct E&S/Impact screening and assign risk ratings at pre-investment stage.
- Scope and coordinate due diligence, including budgets and external advisors.
- Assess compliance with E&S requirements and Impact goals.
- Monitor ESAPs, IAPs, and CAPs with portfolio companies.
- Track E&S risks and Impact opportunities post-investment.
- Support investment decisions with accurate E&S and Impact documentation.
Monitoring, Systems Management & Reporting
- Collect and validate ESG and Impact data from portfolio companies.
- Lead periodic reporting to the Company and investors.
- Maintain and improve ESG and Impact management systems and toolkits.
- Ensure timely submission of performance reports and oversee compliance.
- Manage grievance mechanisms and lead the annual ESG & Impact reporting process.
ESG & Impact Strategy
- Contribute to group-level ESG and Impact strategy.
- Enhance ESG and Impact KPIs, reporting systems, and impact performance.
- Support effective stakeholder engagement (deal teams, investors, specialists, communities).
Qualification, Skills and Experience required:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (environmental/social management, sustainability, finance, economics, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of impact investing terminology and tools (e.g., UN PRI).
- Minimum 8 years' experience in responsible investment, sustainability, impact investing, E&S measurement, or development finance - ideally within a financial institution or consulting.
- Proven expertise in renewable energy and climate sectors, including familiarity with leading ESG/Impact standards (IFC Performance Standards, OPIM, SDG Impact Standards, PRI SDG Outcomes, Impact Frontiers, climate taxonomies, gender-lens investing).
- Experience with ESG/Impact indicators, tracking, and reporting (in a supervisory or quality-control capacity).
- Solid understanding of fund-level technical criteria (energy efficiency, climate finance, GHG/carbon reporting) and ESG/Impact management systems.
- Working knowledge of ESG/Impact reporting frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD, IPRN).
- Experience or interest in Sub-Saharan African markets.
- Strong Excel, PowerPoint, and Word skills.
- Ability to prioritise, multitask, and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong analytical, strategic, and creative problem-solving skills.
Technical skills:
- Strong management and analytical capabilities.
- Advanced ESG and impact investing expertise, including reporting.
- Skilled in preparing impact reports, investment documentation, and presentations.
- Proficient in data extraction, management, visualisation, modelling, and analysis, with solid project management abilities.
Travel
- Willing to travel within the Sub-Sahara African Region.
