The Principal Network Engineer is a highly skilled subject matter expert, responsible for designing, architecting, and leading complex and strategic network initiatives.
This role involves setting network technology standards, driving innovation, and providing leadership in network infrastructure design and implementation.
The Principal Network Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping network strategies and ensuring their alignment with business objectives.
Key responsibilities:
- Leads the design and architecture of advanced network solutions, including LAN, WAN, data center, cloud, and hybrid environments.
- Develops highly scalable and resilient network architectures to meet current and future business requirements.
- Defines and establishes network technology standards, best practices, and roadmaps.
- Evaluates new networking technologies and recommends their adoption based on business needs.
- Contributes to driving strategic network initiatives that align with the company's long-term goals.
- Introduces innovative solutions and approaches to enhance network performance, security, and efficiency.
- Manages network projects, from inception to completion.
- Ensures that project objectives are achieved, resources are allocated effectively, and project milestones are met.
- Collaborates closely with senior leadership, cross-functional teams, and business stakeholders to ensure network solutions align with overall business strategies.
- Serves as a subject matter expert and shares deep technical knowledge and insights with the team.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with network vendors, service providers, and technology partners.
- Evaluates vendor offerings, negotiates contracts, and ensures alignment with the organizational needs.
- Leads efforts to optimize network performance, including analyzing traffic patterns, implementing QoS measures, and enhancing network availability.
- Stays informed about emerging networking technologies, trends, and industry developments.
- Develops and maintains high-level network documentation, including architecture diagrams, configuration templates, standards, and guidelines.
- Plans network capacity to accommodate anticipated business growth and evolving needs.
- Performs any other related task as required.
To thrive in this role, you need to have:
- Extended understanding of advanced networking concepts, protocols, architectures, and services.
- Extended proficiency in configuring and managing complex network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and hybrid environments.
- Extended knowledge of advanced network protocols and technologies such as BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VxLAN, SD-WAN, and advanced security protocols.
- Extended hands-on experience with network monitoring, analysis, and management tools.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills to convey technical information effectively.
- Extended proficiency in network administration and configuration tools.
- Extended experience leading and managing large-scale network projects.
- Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex network issues.
- Extended ability to align network strategies with business goals.
Academic qualifications and certifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Network Administration certification (Azure, Google, Amazon) preferred.
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), or Juniper Networks Certified Associate (JNCIA) are beneficial.
- Relevant certifications such as Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE), or equivalent certifications are preferred.
Required experience:
- Extensive experience in network engineering and progressively responsible roles.
- Extensive background working in a networking environment.
- Extensive experience with network security.
- Extensive WAN and LAN experience.
- Extensive experience in wireless equipment, protocols, standards, and wireless LAN design.
