IRRIGATION TECHNICIAN

The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems across the Estate, ensuring efficient water distribution and the careful stewardship of this precious resource. This role is hands-on, field-based, and essential to maintaining the health, aesthetic, and productivity of Boschendal's gardens and regenerative spaces.

You will work closely with the Production Lead and other Land Regeneration teams to ensure that water systems support both the operational and environmental goals of the Estate.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDES BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Irrigation Management & Maintenance


• Inspect, maintain, and repair all irrigation systems to ensure optimal water use and efficient coverage.


• Monitor irrigation schedules, controllers, and pressure to optimise water consumption in a water-scarce environment.


• Identify and promptly repair leaks, blockages, and faulty components such as sprinkler heads, valves, filters, and pipes.


• Replace or clean filters and maintain irrigation tools and machinery in good working condition.


• Keep daily, weekly, and monthly logs of irrigation system inspections and repairs.


• Ensure irrigation systems comply with environmental and safety standards.

Water Stewardship & Sustainability


• Conserve and manage water responsibly — ensure every drop is used with purpose and precision.


• Promote and implement water-wise and regenerative irrigation practices aligned with Boschendal's sustainability vision.


• Assist in planning water-efficient garden designs and layouts for both production and hospitality areas.

Garden & Infrastructure Areas

Responsible for irrigation within:

  • The Olive Press gardens;
  • Food gardens;
  • The Werf precinct;
  • Nursery areas;
  • Cottages and hospitality landscapes across the Estate.

Installation & System Development

  • Assist with the design and installation of new irrigation systems, including pumps, motors, controllers,
  • valves, and piping.
  • Calibrate and set up new zones and ensure even water distribution.
  • Support seasonal irrigation planning and upgrades in collaboration with the Land Regen and Maintenance teams.

Planning, Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of water usage, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Complete weekly reports for the Production Lead and hospitality stakeholders, noting any urgent issues impacting guest experiences.
  • Contribute to the monthly water usage report and help identify areas for improved efficiency.
  • Maintain and submit the Maintenance Checklist / Logbook monthly.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with garden teams and contractors to ensure smooth operations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, hospitality teams, and other departments regarding irrigation schedules or interruptions.
  • Uphold a positive, proactive attitude and contribute to a culture of learning, teamwork, and care for people and place.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Formal Qualification (Essential) :

A recognised certificate or diploma in Irrigation Technology, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field.

Experience (Essential)

  • Minimum of 1 year's hands-on experience in irrigation maintenance, installation, or landscape water systems.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot irrigation systems and maintain water infrastructure.
  • Practical knowledge of irrigation controllers, pumps, pressure systems, and valves.
  • Basic understanding of regenerative or water-wise irrigation practices will be advantageous.
