Job Description

Boston Institute of Analytics (BIA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head Academic Counsellor to lead our student admissions and counselling department at our Johannesburg campus. This senior leadership role requires a professional with a proven track record in academic guidance, admissions, and team management. You will be responsible for providing strategic direction, mentoring junior counsellors, and driving student enrolment targets.

As the Head Academic Counsellor, you will be a key member of the management team, overseeing the effective functioning of the counselling department. You will ensure the highest standards of student support, from initial inquiry through to enrolment and retention, while aligning with the company's organizational goals and vision.

Key Responsibilities


• Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategic plans for the counselling department to meet student intake and enrolment targets. Provide overall clinical responsibility for the psychological and academic care of students.


• Team Supervision & Mentorship: Lead, supervise, and mentor junior academic counsellors. You will provide guidance on the latest ideas and approaches to student counselling and admissions techniques.


• Admissions & Enrolment Management: Oversee the entire admissions process, ensuring a seamless and efficient experience for prospective students and their families. This includes setting and monitoring departmental targets for lead conversion and enrolment.


• Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including marketing and academic teams, to ensure a cohesive approach to student recruitment and retention. Build positive relationships with students, parents, and educational partners to foster engagement.


• Record & Data Management: Oversee the maintenance of accurate records and utilize CRM and student information systems for effective data management and reporting.


• Industry Awareness & Reporting: Stay updated on local education market trends, competitor strategies, and industry innovations. Advise management on the division of work and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as student retention rates and overall student satisfaction.


• Student Support: Act as a resource and point of contact for complex student cases. The role may also involve providing support for workshops and events that promote student engagement and well-being.

Preferred Candidate Profile


• Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in academic counselling or a related field, with demonstrated success in a leadership or senior role. Experience in an EdTech environment is highly preferred.


• Education: A Bachelor's degree in Education, Counselling, or Psychology is required. A Master's degree is often preferred or required for this senior role, along with advanced certifications in counselling or career development.


• Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team. Strong strategic and creative thinking skills.


• Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills, both verbal and written, in English. The ability to communicate in another official language of South Africa would be an advantage.


• Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with CRM tools or other student information systems is essential for effective data management and reporting.


• Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to address student concerns, academic challenges, and career dilemmas by offering solutions and advice.
