Position Summary
The Assistant SHE Officer will provide crucial support to the SSE Officer in the implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of the company's integrated Safety, Health, and Environmental management systems. This role is ideal for an individual with a foundational understanding of South African SHE legislation who is eager to develop their practical skills and build a rewarding career in the field. The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring compliance and promoting a proactive safety culture on the ground.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Health:
Assist in conducting daily/weekly workplace inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments (HIRAs).
Support the investigation of incidents, accidents, and near-misses in accordance with company procedures and relevant legislation.
Help monitor and enforce the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Assist in the preparation and delivery of SHE inductions, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns.
Maintain and update safety files for sites and contractors, ensuring they are always audit-ready.
Participate in internal safety committee meetings and act as a secretary if required.
Environment:
Support environmental monitoring activities, including waste management, water usage, and emissions control.
Assist in ensuring compliance with environmental authorizations and waste management licenses.
Help with the collection and management of environmental data for reporting purposes.
Promote environmental awareness and company sustainability initiatives.
Position Administration & Compliance:
Maintain accurate and up to date SHE records, including registers for incidents, training, inspections, and equipment.
Assist in the preparation of monthly SHE performance reports for management review.
Stay abreast of new and amended South African SHE legislation and standards.
Provide administrative support for the SHE department, including managing documentation for the ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems.
Assist in preparing for and during client and external audits
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
A relevant National Diploma/Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or a related field
OR a SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course) certificate or equivalent.
OR a National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NQF Level 4/5).
1 - 2 years of experience in a SHE-related role, preferably within the Food Manufacturing sector in South Africa, Including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification.
A solid understanding of key South African SHE legislation, including but not limited to:
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 85 of 1993
Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) 130 of 1993
National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) 107 of 1998
Hazardous Substances Act, and others as relevant.
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Excellent communication skills in English [and other relevant local languages].
A valid driver's license and own reliable transport.
