Procurement Team Leader

Star Merchant has an exciting opportunity available for a Procurement Team Leader to be based in Umhlanga, Durban. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and overseeing the procurement team to ensure the efficient and cost-effective acquisition of goods and services required by the company. This role involves coordinating procurement activities, managing supplier relationships, ensuring timely deliveries, and maintaining procurement standards in line with company goals and compliance regulations.
**Minimum Requirement**:
- A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in procurement or supply chain management with a proven
track record of leading a procurement team.
- 1 to 2 years supervisory experience.
- Strong understanding of procurement processes, supplier negotiation, and contract management.
- Knowledge of procurement software and systems.
- Competent in MS Office products.
- Must have a valid South African Driver’s License.
**Responsibilities**:
**Financial metrics/operational duties**:
- Lead, motivate, & manage procurement team to ensure high performance & efficient procurement
processes.
- Ensure team members are effectively trained, motivated, and aligned with the organization's procurement
- objectives. Provide leadership, mentorship, and regular performance feedback to foster growth and
efficiency within the team.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, helping them grow in their roles and develop their
skills.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and support team development through training and feedback.
- Collaborate with senior management to define and implement the procurement strategy in alignment with the company’s objectives.
- Analyze market trends and procurement data to identify cost-saving opportunities and process
improvements.
- Forecast procurement needs and work with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment with operational
requirements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, negotiating favorable terms and conditions to
achieve cost-effectiveness and high-quality standards.
- Monitor supplier performance, addressing any issues related to delivery timelines, quality, or pricing, and
implement corrective actions as needed.
- Mitigate risks related to procurement, such as supply chain disruptions, price fluctuations, and non
- compliance with contractual agreements.
- Ensure suppliers meet company compliance standards, including health, safety, & environmental
regulations.
- Oversee the procurement process, ensuring the timely and cost-effective sourcing of goods and services.
- Coordinate with warehousing and inventory teams to ensure proper stock levels & the effective flow of
goods.
- Review and approve purchase orders, contracts, and supplier agreements in line with company policies.
- Monitor procurement budgets and expenditures, ensuring procurement activities stay within budget and
contribute to the company’s financial goals.
- Implement cost-control strategies to achieve savings without compromising quality or service levels.
- Ensure procurement activities are compliant with internal policies, legal requirements, & industry
regulations.
- Prepare regular procurement reports, highlighting performance metrics, cost savings, and key
achievements.
- Work closely with other departments such as warehouse operations, finance and sales administration to
align procurement activities with business needs.
- Address any cross-departmental issues & streamline communication to improve overall procurement
efficiency.
- Manage BEE-compliant suppliers as per the company’s BEE strategy and maintain a supplier base that
meets required BEE ratings.
- Assist with Ad Hoc tasks as required.
**People**:
- Performance must be tracked by yourself and the onus is placed on you to set-up performance review
meetings with the Line Manager.
**Compliance, risk and quality**:
- Ensure 100% compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Adhere to 100% compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Ensure 100% compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Save all work, templates, and records monthly and yearly for audit, enquiry, or investigation purposes.
- Produce high-quality, neat, logical, and easy-to-follow work/templates/financial models with substantiated
facts and no numbers in formulas.
- Save and back up final versions and documents chronologically.
- Declare all gifts and avoid accepting kickbacks, reporting any instances immediately.
- Declare any conflicts of interest upfront
