**Job Purpose**:
To contribute to the prevention of and the reduction in the incidence and severity of fires and other threatening dangers as well as undertaking the high-level of technical functions associated with fire safety function.

**Key Responsibility Areas**:
Manage the disposition and work efficiency of a section of Fire Safety Officers through providing guidance on prioritization of inspections required by legislation, complaints and routine inspections.
Provide direction to Fire Safety Officers in advising applicants/architects/engineers on matters related to fire safety in buildings and conduct intensive fire safety surveys to advise on measures to be taken to minimise risk from fire life and property.
Contribute to the development of Fire Safety policies and risk mitigation procedures and conduct researches based on all aspects around fire and safety matters.
Collate information on the changing environment, new products and concepts used in building design, advising Fire Safety Officers on measuring new products and concepts against standards and legislation.
Provide direction to developers on procedures relating to the certification of Fire Safety building materials and disseminates such information to the Branch.
Determine and implement fire safety measurements, crowd control limits and structural requirement regarding special events.

**Essential Requirements**:
Diploma in Fire Technology of the South African Emergency Services Institute or Graduate Diploma of the Institution of Fire Engineers. (NQF 6)

4 Years as a multi-skilled Fire Safety Officer in a local authority fire service.

**Preferred Requirements**:
Higher Diploma (Associate Diploma) in Fire Technology of the South African Emergency Services Institute or Membership Diploma of the Institution of Fire Engineers. (NQF 7).

6 Years in a field related to multi-skilled Fire Safety practice.

Special Conditions:
1. Must be prepared to work anywhere within the area of authority having jurisdiction.
2. Must perform standby duties and perform duties outside normal office hours.
3. Required to work in hazardous locations and areas e.g above grade,and on chemical plant premises.
4. Maintain an effective relationship with those contacted during the course of duties.
5. Incumbent will be required to accept statutory appointment in terms of extant legislation.
6. Incumbent must be required to submit to medical monitoring as required by extant legislation or sound working practice.
