Electrical Protection Specialist

The position is responsible for maintaining, developing, and providing a specialised service in respect of medium and low voltage electrical systems, specific protection relay settings, fault calculations and load flow studies.
**Key responsibilities will include**:
- Conducting annual reliability audits, tests (secondary and primary injections) on medium voltage equipment, protection, and metering relays.
- Recommending cost-effective upgrades and replacement of protection and metering relays.
- Planning, controlling, and supporting Contractors towards ensuring task execution.
- Ensuring all electrical equipment on the network is functional, protected, and reliable.
- Providing after-hours/ Standby maintenance support.
- Researching, developing, and improving existing methods, technology, and equipment.
- Implementing change where required.
- Investigating and reporting on MV protection trips, quality of electrical supply.
- Providing quality technical protection - related support service to underground electrical equipment.
- Compiling reports on the status and condition of assets.
- Completing related administration, SAP notifications and maintenance of database.
- Maintaining technical specifications, diagrams, operating procedures, training manuals etc.
- Ordering equipment, reporting needs, and operating within a set of financial parameters.
- Energy monitoring and management.
- Ensuring adherence to SHEQ standards and procedures.

- Must have good understanding of electrical systems particularly ABB systems.
- Must be able to do troubleshooting and fault finding.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have good problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to act decisively when action is required.

- Good Numerical skills.
**Qualifications & Experience**:
- National Diploma/S4/N6 or degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Accredited advanced Protection Courses.
- Advanced abilities in the use of ETAP.
- Registered with Engineering Council of South Africa advantageous.
- Computer literacy (efficient in MS Office & SAP).
- A minimum of 5 years post qualifying experience in electrical protection within a medium voltage environment.
- Sound knowledge of testing of Relays, breakers, and transformers.
- Experience in conducting plant audits.
