Background

In 2018, it was estimated that South Africa has about 154 000 people with undiagnosed TB disease despite the declining TB incidence year on year. Finding missing people with TB is a key national priority. Of the 154 348 missing people with TB in the 2018 estimation, 68% of whom were PLHIV.

Analysis of South Africa’s TB cascade reveals gaps along the entire continuum. In 2018, 86% of people with incident TB accessed a diagnostic test and 80% were diagnosed. However, the largest gap in the cascade is access to TB treatment. A quarter of cases that reach government diagnostic centres are lost to follow-up (LTFU) prior to treatment initiation. For those who do access TB treatment, more than one in five (21%) do not achieve treatment success.

There is a need for community outreach services to trace people who are lost to follow up during TB treatment or after diagnosis and not started on treatment

Screening and testing of high-risk groups at community level to find people with undiagnosed TB in the community.

Through the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria grant, funding has been made available to support the implementation of Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV & AIDS services in 12 TB priority districts by appointing TB Support Officers.

The TB Support Officers (TSOs) are going to be recruited and trained by the grant to support community TB activities in the 12 districts. The TSOs are to be recruited through NDOH SRs.

**Job Purpose**:

- To increase TB case finding by providing screening and testing of high-risk groups.
- To trace and link to care people diagnose with TB, but not started on treatment and people who interrupted treatment
- To improve treatment adherence by educating and counselling TB patients

**General responsibilities**:

- TB screening and specimen collection on close contacts of TB patients and other high-risk groups at community level.
- Refer those who test positive and sick household contacts to the nearest clinic.
- Conduct tracing of people (Including TB patients) who miss clinic appointments.
- Conduct door-to-door outreaches,
- Support Mobile DCXR outreach to increase demand for TB screening services
- Conduct patient education and counselling for TB patients.
- Support adherence clubs to enhance adherence and retention in care for TB patients
- Report daily to the supervisor (ENA)
- Capturing daily activities on M&E tools

**Qualifications**: Grade 12 or equivalent**

Certification as a Community Health Care Worker will be an advantage

**Requirements**:

- Able to work in a Team
