**REQUIREMENTS**
- Qualifications: Master of Science degree in health science or a related biological field, such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Genetics.
- At least 3 years’ working experience as a clinical/biochemistry/molecular laboratory manager, or 5+ years’ working experience as a laboratory technician.
- Skilled/experienced in biochemistry/molecular/cell culture techniques.
- Knowledge of the use of chemical substances, radioactivity and safe laboratory practice, and knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Self-starter with excellent time management skills and ability to take initiative.
- Good communication & training skills.
- Ability to organise own workload under the direction of the Head of Research & Laboratories.
- Ability to work as an individual and part of a team.
- Adaptability, high degree of technical competence, ability to multi-task to meet all research needs.
- Operation of specialised equipment, requiring specialist training.
- Computer literacy.
- Willingness to register for a PhD project within the scope of surgical research will be an advantage.
**MAIN DUTIES**
**1. Management of Laboratory**
You will be responsible for day-to-day laboratory management duties within the Department of Surgery’s Geoffrey Candy Laboratory, including the cell/tissue culture & molecular facilities, and will continue to participate in the research of the laboratory and Department. A large proportion of your time will be devoted to general laboratory management duties, and include:
- Management of overall laboratory operations and maintenance of laboratory equipment by development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to establish and ensure safety compliance, security, and quality standards; develop troubleshooting procedures; ensure staff/student compliance.
- Operational oversight of the laboratory technical staff including the execution and delegation of laboratory housekeeping duties.
- Closely monitor the storage of biological samples and provide oversight of how these are logged in our freezers/fridges.
- Ensure each laboratory worker/student have supplied and signed off on relevant material safety data sheets (MSDS) for their individual proposed projects.
- The certification of instrument/equipment performance; arrange equipment replacement, service, and repair. Generate equipment performance reports; maintain records.
- You will attend to administrative and management matters which include maintaining laboratory supplies inventory; anticipate needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
- In collaboration with the Head of Research, you will develop an annual budget for the general costs of running the laboratory (including pH meters, pipette calibration, surface disinfectants, paper towels, bench coat, CO2 cylinders, etc.)
- Maintain and monitor laboratory productivity in functional areas, identifying peak and slack periods, making operational or staffing/student adjustment.
- Intermittent checks on correct disposal of liquid
- and solid chemicals, biohazard materials, radioactive substances, sharps and general laboratory and safety compliance.
- Carry out any additional duties as required by the Head of Research & Laboratories.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge.
**2. Other duties**
In addition to laboratory management, you will be expected to:
- Conduct high quality research within the Department of Surgery’s research interests, preferably by also registering for PhD studies within a suitable field.
- Present and Publish research in accredited, peer-reviewed journals.
- General introductory orientation of new staff and students to the laboratory as to where, what, how, when and who.
- Supervise/co-supervise postgraduate research students within the Department.
- Facilitate/lecture on in-house research courses.
