Position Overview

Job Title: Teacher Assistant

Programme: YES (Youth Employment Service) - 1-Year Internship

Schools: Combined Technical Skills School and The Foundation School

Location: Sophiatown & Melville, Johannesburg

Reporting To: Head of Department

Start Date: To be confirmed

Employment Type: 1-Year Internship (YES Programme)

Purpose of the Role

To provide classroom-based support to teachers and learners, enhancing the learning environment and contributing to effective teaching and learning processes.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist teachers with the preparation of learning materials and classroom setup
- Provide individual and small group support to learners during lessons
- Supervise learners during non-teaching times such as breaks, transitions, and school activities
- Support learners with special educational needs (LSEN) under teacher guidance
- Assist with classroom management and ensure a safe, inclusive learning environment
- Help maintain classroom resources and materials
- Participate in school functions and staff development opportunities when required
- Perform basic administrative tasks such as photocopying, record keeping, and filing
- Uphold confidentiality and child safeguarding protocols at all times

Minimum Requirements

Education: Must be in the 3rd or final year of a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or in the final year of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

Experience: No formal teaching experience required; prior exposure to a school environment is advantageous

Skills and Competencies:

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively
- Reliable, responsible, and professional conduct
- Willingness to support learners with diverse learning needs

Clearances/Checks Required:

- Clear criminal record
- Clearance from the National Register for Sexual Offenders
- Clearance from the National Child Protection Register
