Data Modeler

Looking for a Data Modeler at one of our client locations Johannesburg

Qualifications: Minimum of 4-year tertiary qualification in Engineering, Data Sciences, Computer Science, or IT Experience working with conventional relational database management systems and new Big Data Platforms and Systems.
- Understanding of entity-relationship modeling techniques.
- Understanding of normalization and denormalization.
- Highly proficient in logical dimensional data model and star-schema design.
- Knowledge of generalization and abstraction techniques in data warehouse design.
- Understanding of data store modeling (schema on write) and data access modeling (schema on read) and when to use each.
- SQL knowledge (both Oracle SQL and Hive SQL).
- 5+ years’ experience in working in data warehouse design and implementation.
- Proven abilities to take initiative and be innovative.
- Telecommunications industry experience would be beneficial.
- English fluency for written and verbal communication.
- Must have advanced analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong knowledge of current industry and data modeling best practices.
- Strong communication skill within a client-facing environment is essential.
- The ability to engage with confidence across the organisation structures is a key advantage.
- Needs to be self-driven, ability to work under pressure, by meeting deadlines effectively and efficiently.

Duties

The data modeler will work with the data architects and analysts to design data structures that will meet organizational needs using conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
- Data Model Design for the curated Data Lake environment and for the dimensional data marts to enable transformation of raw data into meaningful insights.
- Responsible for liaison with data analysts and data architects to fully understand all the source systems and the information available in them and leverage this understanding in the data model design.
- Responsible for utilising and including industry and organisational best practices, principles, guidelines, frameworks and templates in the design of the data structures.
- Supporting the conversion of a logical/conceptual data model to the physical data model and providing the support for the ETL design to populate the physical model. - Creation and maintenance of the Data Dictionary which details, field by field, the datatypes, the field meanings in organizational context and what are the pieces of information which will be mapped and stored in the physical model to meet the BI requirements.
- Creation and maintenance of the data map/ source to target mapping that will show how the data will move from the source systems to the physical model including transformation rules or how the data from different systems will be integrated together to populate the physical model. - Identifying the Master data sources to support the data model.
- Providing inputs into the ETL design.
- Producing and maintaining the artefacts to showcase requirements coverage through the logical and physical models.
- Identifying the business reference data requirements and to design the structures to hold and maintain the business reference data.
- Considering the history/ data retention requirements in the design of the dimensions, aggregates, summaries etc.
- Design of the analytical or denormalized records based on business needs, reporting needs or needs of a data service.
- Keeping abreast of global and local best practices as it relates data architecture and data modelling.
- Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and schema design to ensure consistency of data models.

**Salary**: From R25,350.75 per month
