MEng Opportunity: Production of fuels obtained from the pyrolysis of waste tyres
- Location: Department of Process Engineering, Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch
- Degree level: Full-time research-based master’s degree in Chemical Engineering
Two opportunities are available for postgraduate research at master’s level to investigate the pyrolysis of waste tyres, and the fractional condensation and subsequent upgrading of the oil obtained from the pyrolysis process. One of the two projects is experimental, while the second is focussed on simulations and techno-economics.
It is well known that waste tyres are problematic and create environmental issues. The characteristics of tyres that make them so useful and durable are specifically those characteristics which make their recycling and decomposition difficult. A need therefore exists to recycle the rubber part of waste tyres. One such solution is pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of a compound at elevated temperatures in the presences of an inert atmosphere. A number of studies have already considered the pyrolysis of waste or end-of-life tyres. The oils produced have an energetic value and can used as a feed stock for various fuel fractions. However, due to the nature of the rubber in the tyres, the oils have a high sulphur content preventing their direct use as a fuel. In recent years a number of experimental studies have considered the pyrolysis process, various options for the desulpurisation of the oil and fractionation of the oil, albeit at the pyrolysis condenser outlet or via distillation. However, integrated experimental work is still outstanding as well as a detailed techno-economic analysis of the process as a whole incorporating recent developments. Two masters projects are therefore available within the scope of this project:
1. Techno-economic analysis of the production of fuel fractions from waste tyres, based on
AspenPlus® process simulations; and
2. Experimental measurement of an integrated pyrolysis, fractional condensation and distillation process for the production of fuel fractions from waste tyres.
