Laboratory Operations Manager

**Position Purpose**:The Laboratory Operations Manager (LOM) leads the operational team that ensures the physical space, equipment, specimens, and reagents/consumables of the lab efficiently support all lab work. Independent judgment is used in making decisions which affect the current and future success of the lab. The LOM works collaboratively across lab functional groups to ensure projects are coordinated and well communicated. The LOM works with international collaborators to coordinate operational and administrative activities necessary to the smooth functioning of a clinical research laboratory, adhering to Good Clinical Lab Practices (GCLP).

**Laboratory Operations (40%)**
- Ensure equipment needs across equipment users and the operations team are coordinated, ensuring clear communication and that the needs of scientific staff are met.
- Responsible for the lab’s service level agreements; represent the organization when negotiating pricing discounts for supplies, reagents, equipment, and services.
- Oversee laboratory instruments, coordinating regular service and repairs, software upgrades, purchases, usage and troubleshooting and ensuring compliance with GCLP standards.
- Oversee complex equipment installation issues such as international shipments and renovations required to accommodate new equipment.
- Forecast replacement of aging equipment and expected repairs. Research new equipment models and write associated budget requests.
- Chair the laboratory safety committee, oversee laboratory safety training requirements, conduct safety risk assessments and lead risk-mitigation efforts as needed.
- Address Environmental Health & Safety issues, maintaining clear and comprehensive SOPs. Coordinate policies in conjunction with the Fred Hutch Environmental Health and Safety team.
- Oversee reagent and consumable inventories and inventory projections; conduct continuous improvement of inventory management.
- Provide on-call support for issues during emergencies 24/7, coming into the lab after normal business hours should the need arise.
- Assist financial managers with development and administration of budgets and schedules. Coordinate end of financial year inventory and capital equipment audits.

**Facilities Management (10%)**
- Oversee the physical spaces o the lab and office areas, ensuring space is well utilized, functional, and designed to meet business needs. Reduce operating costs and improve efficiencies when possible.
- Supervise staff responsible for laboratory facilities, ensuring GCLP standards are followed.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for routine tests and emergency planning to maintain consistent building operations.
- Design and oversee lab renovations and buildouts as needed.

**Repository and Specimen Processing (10%)**
- Oversee staff responsible for repository and specimen processing, ensuring adherence to SOPs and GCLP guidelines.
- Forecast repository needs and advise laboratory leadership on budgeting and staffing for repository and sample processing activities.
- Monitor usage of laboratory information system(s) by identifying information needs and problems; recommend improvements and ensure employee training.

**Supervisory Responsibilities (20%)**
- Manage program staff; oversee hiring, training, and annual performance evaluations.
- Engage staff in professional development, including training, coaching, and mentoring, where applicable.
- Ensure all laboratory staff receive and remain current with required safety and related trainings.

**GCLP Compliance (10%)**
- Work closely with the laboratory PI and QA staff in funding agency site reviews and/or audits; coordinate the preparation and submission of follow-up materials as requested.
- Review safety, repository, and specimen-related lab documentation, performing QC checks to ensure compliance, including preparing and assisting during audits where needed.
- Review logs and documentation, performing trend analysis as needed.
- Draft new laboratory SOPs and edit and review existing laboratory SOPs, ensuring they are kept up to date.
- Oversee documents required to satisfy regulatory requirements.

**Project Management (10%)**
- Collaborate with other managers of the lab to develop and implement new projects to improve cross
- group communication and efficiencies.
- Work with laboratory leadership and management to ensure lab operations support for upcoming scientific needs of the lab.
- Support collaborative projects with equipment use agreements for collaborators use of equipment or service agreements, working with laboratory staff, finance, and legal for agreement requirements.
- Track and report on the execution of other special projects as needed.

Perform temporary QA duties in the absence of the QA Associate. Other duties, as required.
