Senior Underwriter, Energy

Based in Johannesburg and reporting to the Head of the Energy & Construction for our wider Mediterranean and Africa region, you will work closely with clients and brokers to craft bespoke solutions and develop new relationships predominately relating to the Construction/Engineering segment.

**Responsibilities**

**In this role you will.**
- Underwrite new and renewal business to meet profitability targets
- Underwrite in line with the Energy & Construction governance framework e.g. Underwriting Authorities, Underwriting Guidelines and Functional Rules
- Develop Energy & Construction specific content to support the respective Regional Practice Groups
- Ensure contract certainty is achieved on all accounts at time of inception
- Drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including Market Management, Risk Consulting, Claims and Operations
- Manage referrals and undertake 4-eye reviews with underwriters
- Contribute to the development and execution of regional underwriting strategy
- Create and maintain positive relationships with key producers and clients and other relevant stakeholders
- Ensure accurate policy documentation is issued to producers
- Provide training and support to junior members of the Energy & Construction team

**To be successful in the role**:
**You will have.**
- Around 10 years’ experience underwriting profitable business in the Energy & Construction segment of large corporate international insurance with a strong background in the South African Market EAR business
- Recognised relationships with clients and brokers at peer group level and you are well established within the market
- A specialised understanding of South African and African Energy & Construction insurance markets and of the competitor landscape
- The ability to leverage data and analytics to make business more efficient and effective
- A good understanding of the legal and regulatory environment
- The ability to design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings for contracts
- Excellent communication skills, able to build positive relationships both inside and outside the organization, at every level
- Team spirit and a positive and flexible mindset

**Ideally you will also have**
- A degree either in Construction or Engineering
- An insurance professional qualification
- Advanced data analytics knowledge
