Medical Officer

**Main purpose of the job**:

- To join the sub-EFFECT clinical study site team and manage day-to-day activities at the study sites and provide health care to patients participating according to the study protocol

**Location**:

- **Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (main site) & Helen Joseph Hospital - Soweto/Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- Clinical study management_
- Contribute to the development of study documentation and compile source notes and recruitment tools
- To undertake recruitment of eligible patients according to protocol requirements
- To participate in regular meetings and ensure effective communication between the routine clinical and study teams
- Maintain close contact with the study management group and consult them on strategic issues that might have any safety or major financial implications for the project
- Conduct clinical study in accordance with GCP regulations and standard operating procedures
- Proactively resolve protocol queries and missing data with the study management group
- Patient Care and Screening_
- Assist in all clinical aspects of the study, including venepuncture, cannulation, blood sample processing, drug administration, and clinical observation
- Oversee all clinical procedures including dispensing of related drugs to study participants and other protocol-related procedures
- Screen and enroll patients in accordance with the study protocol and ethical guidelines
- Review patient vitals, X-rays, echocardiograms, scans, and other study-related results
- Report any adverse events and ensure appropriate action is taken until a final report is completed
- Quality Assurance_
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of care and counseling conducted at the study site(s)
- Perform spot-check evaluations to quality control clinical source notes and CRFs
- Monitor the Study Recruitment/ Retention Plan including planning meetings
- Staff Management_
- Manage the duties of the clinical study site team and ensure they adhere to standard procedures
- Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments in conjunction with the Site PIs
- Identify study-specific training needs and consequent provision of training for study staff during study implementation
- Teamwork and support_
- To conduct staff training i.e., CRF completion training, quality assurance, and other study-related training
- To act as a leader, resource, and role model
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Site PI, Senior Research Clinician, and/ or CI

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Medical Degree**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Proven experience in the conduct of clinical research and management of research teams will be an advantage**:

- **At least 1 year of post-qualification clinical experience treating patients with HIV infection and opportunistic infections**
