The Daily Maverick is looking for a tenacious Investigative Journalist to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking journalism that makes a difference. You will be responsible for in-depth reporting that uncovers hidden truths, exposes corruption, and informs the public. You will collaborate with a network of sources, analyse data, and produce compelling narratives that drive accountability.
**Minimum Requirements**:
**Qualifications & Experience**:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Political Science, Law, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- At least 3-5 years of investigative reporting experience.
- Proven ability to uncover and report on corruption, mismanagement, or social justice issues.
- Experience using data journalism tools and investigative techniques.
- Strong writing, analytical, and storytelling skills.
- Familiarity with South African media laws, investigative methodologies, and ethical journalism practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team under tight deadlines.
- Strong digital literacy, including experience with OSINT (open-source intelligence), social media analysis, and forensic research.
- Passion for accountability journalism and commitment to public interest reporting.
**Preferred Skills & Attributes**:
- Knowledge of financial investigations, forensic accounting, or corporate transparency.
- Experience working on cross-border investigations or with international journalism networks.
- Multimedia storytelling skills (podcasting, video, data visualization).
- Proficiency in multiple South African languages is an advantage.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Conduct in-depth research and investigative reporting on issues of national and public interest.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of sources, including whistleblowers, industry insiders, public officials and.
- Analyse and interpret complex documents, financial records, and legal filings.
- Write exclusive, agenda setting stories
- Work closely with editors, multimedia specialists, and data analysts to present journalism in innovative ways.
- File access-to-information requests and pursue legal avenues to obtain critical information.
- Write regular investigative pieces and breaking news stories based on investigations.
- Ensure accuracy, fairness, and legal compliance in all reporting.
- Collaborate with local and international investigative journalism networks.
