GELC aims at to fostering legal research and innovation to enhance the ways that environmental law and governance frameworks and systems respond to global environmental crises particularly associated with the Anthropocene - a geological period of time during which human activities have caused unprecedented changes to Earth’s climate and ecosystems. The research themes at GELC are categorised under four main themes, namely: Re-imagining the future of environmental law and governance; human rights and the environment; biodiversity, ecosystems and oceans; and climate change and sustainability. GELC further offers an LLM in Environmental Law with the following modules: Advanced Environmental Law, International Environmental Law, Climate Law and Governance, and Constitutional Law and Nature. Students also have the opportunity to pursue doctoral research in areas related to environmental law and governance, globally and in South Africa.
- Conduct research and publish, participate in research projects, as well as work closely with the Director towards advancing the research focus areas of the GELC
- Facilitation of learning, primarily at postgraduate level
- Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Academic and general administration
- Curriculum development and assessment
- Community engagement
- Manage the GELC social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and assist with the updating of the webpage
- Assist with the organisation of webinars, seminars, conferences and public lectures

**Minimum Requirements**

Minimum Requirements for the position:

- LLD or equivalent in the field of environmental law

The following will serve as a strong recommendation in being considered for appointment:

- Evidence of supervision experience at LLB or Masters level
- Teaching experience at LLB or Masters level
- Evidence of peer reviewed research publications
- Knowledge in legal research methods and pedagogy in environmental law

Competencies required:

- Ability to liaise with stakeholders in government, academia and civil society.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a multicultural environment
- Ability to work under pressure and to adapt to dynamic work circumstances
- Ability to develop manuscripts for publication in accredited, high impact journals
- Experience in organising and facilitating online and face-to-face academic events.-
