Process and Instrumentation Technician

PURPOSE

To be part of the Instrumentation team to ensure minimum downtime and maximum reliability of plant machinery and equipment.

SPAN OF CONTROL

This role is responsible for the following engineering processes:

- Repair, maintenance, and upkeep of Instrumentation, drives, HMI’s and PLC’s
- Repair, rebuild, Pc’s for computer-controlled Machines.
- Calibration of temperature, gas and flow measuring equipment
- Install, maintain, repair, overhaul, calibrate and test a wide variety of industrial instrumentation that record, indicate, control, and regulate level, flow, pressure, and temperature,
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings and specifications related to installations and major repair work.
- Diagnose and make changes to PLC and SCADA software and hardware to suite production requirements.
- Repair and test work requiring higher-level knowledge, skills, and abilities, and serve as a technical resource to others.
- Maintain process loops.
- Develop and execute preventative maintenance programs.
- Evaluation of instrument performance to identify optimization and enhancement opportunities.
- Energy usage data acquisition
- Maintenance of Electro-Pneumatic and hydraulic systems.QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12 / Matric with a pass mark for mathematics or math’s literacy and English
- The Technician will be required to be available after hours and on standby off-shift and must be able to come into the factory when needed.
- Trade test as an Industrial Instrumentation and Process Control Mechanician or Electrical trade test/ or in the process of completing a trade test.
- National Diploma: Electrical Engineering (Light current)

**Repair, Maintenance and Projects - Deep Focus**
- Develop and execute a proactive maintenance and repair program, to keep all PLC’s, drives and instrumentation at a high level of serviceability. Such program must
- Improve availability and reliability of equipment.
- Minimise downtime.
- Carry out Process and Instrumentation upgrades and projects.
- Ensure OEM standards are adhered to.
- Review and enhance equipment setup in conjunction with production to improve availability and reliability of equipment.

**Strategy and Operational Planning - Curiosity**
- Work with the Process and Instrumentation Manager Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical artisans to develop and update maintenance management system. ** Reporting and Documentation**
- Update utilities reports monthly.
- Update system drawings after upgrades or wiring and equipment changes.

REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and skill
- Knowledge of electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic systems
- Knowledge of servo and stepper motor systems
- Read and interpret technical illustrations, specifications, wiring, pneumatic and hydraulic diagrams.
- Ability to work steady under pressure.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Respond to emergency on night, weekend, and holidays to perform assigned duties.
- Troubleshoot more complex PLC software and hardware issues.
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience working in a similar role within a factory setting. Must have practical experience and working knowledge.
