The Language & Education Intern will be trained in specific skills and competencies, and perform assignments as part of a Literacy & Language team, while under the supervision of a Literacy and Education Consultant. Training activities will include:

- Designing survey tools and participating in literacy surveys.
- Analyzing language data and generating reports.
- Participating in designing adult literacy and Early Grade Reading (EGR)/Multilingual Education (MLE) program strategies.
- Supporting the development of literacy and education materials - including primers, teacher’s guides, supplementary reading materials.
- Assisting in training of literacy teachers.
- Participating in monitoring and evaluation of adult literacy/MLE programs.
- Analyzing community literacy data in order to identify needed support and strategies for the success of language program and community goals.
- Participating in orthography design and testing with the consultant or mentor.
- Following a professional growth plan.

**Experience**:

- Experience demonstrating a personal commitment to a Christian ministry.

**Education**:

- Undergraduate degree in teaching/education, linguistics, literacy or related field.

**Required Skills**:

- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to listen actively and ask questions when needed.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in work.
- Willingness to adapt to new tasks and handle changes in the work environment.
- Comfortable working independently or collaboratively in a remote team.
- Takes initiative in completing tasks and seeks out new learning opportunities.
- Must be fluent in at least two of South Africa’s official languages.
- Fluency in Portuguese or French would be an advantage.
- Must be computer literate.

**General**:

- This is a one-year internship, with both onsite and remote work required.
- This position offers a stipend to the intern throughout the duration of the internship.
- Full-time (40 hours per week) and the intern **must be based in Cape Town, South Africa.**
- As SIL is a faith-based organization, being a committed Christian is an important consideration for this position.
- The position may require occasional international travel therefore a valid passport is required.
- This internship program offers a valuable opportunity for professional growth and experience. Upon successful completion, there is potential for a full-time paid position, based on performance and the availability of roles within the organization.
