Role of the First Line Manager

The First Line Manager is responsible for managing, coaching, and developing the Underwriting/Underwriting-related team. This team consists of Underwriters and Administrators, and the manager's goal is to help them execute their role responsibilities effectively and achieve desired outputs and behaviors aligned with Sanlam's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communicate business requirements clearly and accurately to the team.
  • Ensure effective communication with other role-players to process transactions efficiently.
  • Handle queries with accuracy, urgency, and swift conclusion.
  • Manage people and performance within a productivity, quality, and customer service-oriented environment.
  • Identify process shortcomings and discrepancies, and resolve and communicate with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure effective management of Service Level Agreements between New Business and other stakeholders.
  • Make effective use of Management Information Systems to manage operational effectiveness.
  • Plan and manage operational activities of the team.
  • Identify training and development needs and manage the department budget.
  • Report on team performance, trends, and strategic action plans.

Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • 2-3 years of experience managing a production team or a specialist in the Banking/Insurance industry.
  • Experience in New Business environments, people management, development, and coaching/mentoring.
  • Performance Management experience and exposure to data analysis.
