The University of Cape Town invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Division of Family Medicine. This prestigious position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a national Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded project, focusing on adapting the Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCAT) for sub-Saharan Africa.

About the Project

\

This groundbreaking research aims to measure and improve the core functions of primary care in resource-limited settings. By refining the PCAT for regional use, assessing primary care performance across eleven sub-Saharan African countries, and engaging local researchers and stakeholders, this project has the potential to strengthen healthcare systems, inform policy decisions, and influence World Health Organization recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • \
  • Contribute substantially to the research project, collaborating with the Principal Investigator and team members.\
  • Participate in departmental activities, such as teaching and supervision duties, limited to 12 hours per week.\
  • Meet deadlines, adhere to the University's policies, procedures, and practices, and communicate effectively with team members.\
  • Evaluate primary care performance, compare rural and urban disparities, and inform targeted interventions.\
  • Refine the PCAT for regional use, conduct assessments in participating countries, and engage stakeholders to drive improvements.\
  • Collaborate successfully, work well in a team, and demonstrate strong organisational skills, autonomy, and ability to meet deadlines.\
  • Publish research output and participate in conference presentations, with evidence of publications advantageous.\

  • A PhD acquired within the last three years in relevant fields pertinent to primary care and primary healthcare.\
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and collaborate successfully.\
  • Capability to work autonomously, under pressure, and meet deadlines.\
  • Strong organisational skills and capacity to work in a team.\
  • Evidence of publications and research output would be advantageous.\
  • Experience in postgraduate research supervision is desirable.\
