About the Role

Babylonstoren is seeking a skilled and passionate individual to join our team as a Historical Miller. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a unique and historic grain watermill and distillation facility, sharing our passion for history and heritage with the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging and informative demonstrations of grain milling and basic distillation tasks to the public and school groups.
  • Prepare the milling and distillation areas for daily demonstrations, production, and de-briefing, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Engage with visitors, providing a warm and welcoming experience, and answering questions about the historical context and processes.
  • Package flour and liquor made in demonstration areas for sale in our shop, maintaining adequate stock levels.

Requirements

  • Formal or informal training in grain milling and/or distillation is preferred, although we welcome applicants with a background in any technical craft or practice that would be interested in learning the art of milling and distilling.
  • Matric or a relevant higher qualification would be advantageous.
  • Experience working in a small team and excellent communication skills.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Afrikaans and English.
  • Exceptional people skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment, according to hospitality hours (including weekends), in historical costume.
  • Creative mindset and ability to think on your feet.
