Job Title: Senior Substation Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Substation Engineer to join our team at Engineered Sourcing. As a Senior Substation Engineer, you will be responsible for planning and designing HV power transmission and distribution infrastructure from 33kV up to 765kV.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan and design HV power transmission and distribution infrastructure from 33kV up to 765kV.
  • Responsible for handling multiple projects and preparing and providing guidance in the development of engineering deliverables for electrical substation projects.
  • Perform necessary calculations and studies, including power systems studies on utility and industrial/commercial power transmission and distribution systems.
  • Develop project design documentation, technical specifications, and perform concept and/or detail design layouts.
  • Engage with other project stakeholders and team members to coordinate overall design packages and requirements.
  • Provide direction and guidance to junior engineers, drafters, and designers.
  • Ensure design schedules are met, including providing regular status feedback to business unit principals and project managers.
  • Coordinate and review technical contract documents and perform contractor design reviews.
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to Health, Safety, and the Environment by following the Company's Health, Safety & Environment Policy and applying Safety Management Systems.
  • Identify and analyze design changes, modify design drawings and documents accordingly.
  • Manage, attend, and participate in FAT and SAT planning and activities.
  • Provide engineering support during construction.
  • Resolve and respond to technical queries from contractors.
  • Plan and coordinate pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Attend and contribute to site and project technical meetings as necessary.
  • Final handover of documentation as necessary.
  • Prepare expressions of interest (EOIs), tenders, and request for quotations.
  • Assist and participate in business development and company marketing activities.
  • Adhere to the requirements of Quality Management System.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of processes and Quality Management System.
Requirements:
  • BSc Eng or B.Eng in Electrical Engineering with 7 years relevant post-qualification technical experience.
  • B Tech in Electrical Engineering with 10 years relevant post-qualification technical experience at engineering level.
  • Professional registration.
  • ECSA registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Detail knowledge of power utilization equipment (primary plant equipment) and related structural foundation and bulk civil requirements.
  • Project administration and coordination skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem-solving and team-working skills.
  • Computer literacy with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Sound knowledge of Bentley Microstation.
  • National and International engineering codes and standards.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Self-management and leadership skills.
  • Presentation and report writing skills.
  • Experience in power utility industry (Eskom experience is essential).
  • Valid South African driver's license with no endorsements and their own transportation.
Desired Additional Skills and Knowledge:
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • DigSilent.
  • PSSE.
  • MS Projects.
  • Experience in Protection, Metering, Telecommunication, and Control systems (secondary plant systems).
  • Supplementary qualification or experience in Project Management.
