Job Title: Biotechnology Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Biotechnology Specialist to join our team at the Agricultural Research Council in Gauteng.

About the Role:

  • Contribute to and maintain a live culture collection, diagnostic services, and research projects within the Bacteriology Unit.
  • Perform laboratory tasks related to diagnostic services and research projects, including DNA extraction & PCR, reporting to clients, field trips, and database updates.
  • Assist with client requests and laboratory procedures involving plant bacterial diseases diagnosis, administration, and technology transfer events.
  • Prepare and conduct glasshouse trials.
  • Support the informal training of students and other staff members.
  • Maintain compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety protocols.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Microbiology, Plant Pathology, or Biotechnology with 2 years of experience in a microbiology laboratory. A Master's degree will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to organize and work systematically, independently, and as part of a team.
  • Experience in report writing and compiling presentations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of bacteria isolation and identification.
  • Experience in preparing soil and glasshouse trials.
  • Experience in media, stock solutions, and buffers preparation.
  • Experience in DNA extractions and PCR.
  • Proficiency in laboratory calculations (CFU/gram/ml, etc.).
  • A valid driver's license.
