IFC is embarking on a transformative strategy aimed at amplifying investment activities, particularly in Low-Income Countries (LICs) and Fragile and Conflict-affected States (FCS). This initiative focuses on generating our own investment opportunities in challenging markets by actively engaging in these regions to develop, deepen, and broaden the markets.

The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) represents a key sector within IFC, managing approximately 40% of the organization's overall business in terms of volume and capital at risk. The strategic focus of FIG revolves around three primary pillars: (i) enhancing financial access and inclusion; (ii) scaling sustainability and climate finance; and (iii) improving the efficiency, resilience, and sophistication of financial systems.

Role & Responsibilities:

IFC is seeking to bolster its banking sector expertise to fulfill our expanding mandate and meet the increasing demands from our investment services and advisory streams. The Senior Banking Specialist will be integrated into the existing team of technical experts within IFC's Financial Institutions Group (FIG) Global Industry Unit (CFG). The position is primarily based in Johannesburg, with the potential for global responsibilities under the supervision of the Chief Banking Specialist.

The responsibilities of the Senior Banking Specialist encompass:

  • Contributing to the development of FIG's global strategy.
  • Assisting regional management teams in formulating and executing their regional strategies.
  • Supporting clients through capacity-building initiatives, including technical assistance and workshops.
  • Overseeing existing portfolio exposures.
  • Contributing to the development and dissemination of global knowledge.

This role necessitates significant travel, both regionally and internationally.

Selection Criteria:

  • A Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance or business.
  • A minimum of 20 years of relevant operational experience in private sector banking across various African nations.
  • Extensive banking experience at a senior management level with decision-making authority.
  • Proficiency in credit and risk management, consumer banking, and SME.
  • Familiarity with financial analysis, statistical score modeling, and big data.
  • Experience in due diligence of financial institutions and Fintech.
  • Fluency in English and French; proficiency in Spanish is advantageous.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to foster relationships with clients, government entities, and other stakeholders. A commitment to ethical integrity and transparency is essential.
