2 months ago

Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa United Nations Population Fund Full time

Position Overview:

The intern will work under the guidance of the Head of the Middle Income Country Hub (MIC-Hub) at ESARO, assisting the team in the realms of policy analysis and program advisory services. This role is crucial for supporting Country Offices located in selected middle-income nations in Southern Africa, including various countries in the region.

A collaborative work plan will be established to outline the intern's goals and learning opportunities throughout the internship. Regular progress meetings will be held to create a supportive environment, enhancing the intern's skills and competencies in alignment with UNFPA's mission.

About UNFPA:

UNFPA is the leading UN agency dedicated to ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is realized. The organization works to expand choices and opportunities for women and youth, enabling them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. The current strategic plan emphasizes three transformative objectives: to eliminate preventable maternal deaths, address unmet family planning needs, and eradicate gender-based violence and harmful practices.

UNFPA seeks candidates who can inspire, transform, and deliver impactful results. We are looking for interns who excel in managing resources responsibly and are committed to achieving excellence in program outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in monitoring trends and developments in political, social, and economic contexts related to sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and population development in selected middle-income countries;
  • Contributing to the creation of policy briefs, reports, and other relevant research outputs in accordance with the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action;
  • Aiding in the design, execution, and assessment of technical cooperation programs aimed at sustainable financing to enhance national development planning frameworks;
  • Supporting the organization of trainings, consultations, and relevant meetings initiated by the MIC-Hub as outlined in the annual work plan; and
  • Assisting with additional tasks as required by the MIC-Hub, ESARO.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:

Candidates applying for UNFPA's internship program must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:

  • A) Enrollment in a postgraduate degree program (master's or higher) at a recognized university;
  • B) Enrollment in the final year of a first university degree program (bachelor's or equivalent) at a recognized university;
  • C) Recent graduation with a university degree (as defined in A and B) from a recognized university, with the internship starting within one year of graduation;
  • D) Enrollment in a postgraduate professional traineeship program at a recognized university, undertaking the internship as part of this program.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

  • E) Demonstrated interest in the field of development;
  • F) Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • G) Ability to adapt to new environments and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Individuals with close family ties to UNFPA staff members are not eligible for the internship program.

Required Skills:

  • Strong analytical and writing capabilities.

Language Proficiency:

Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official UN languages, particularly French and/or Spanish, is advantageous.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the internship, participants will gain valuable insights, including:

  • Enhanced understanding of UNFPA and its Programme Division;
  • Familiarity with UNFPA's mandate and policies, including regional structures;
  • Knowledge of UNFPA governance and executive board processes;
  • Insights into UNFPA program design and delivery mechanisms;
  • Understanding of operational dynamics and program support communications;
  • Proficiency in UN technical language and coordination processes;
  • Experience in drafting substantive documents;
  • Networking opportunities with UN colleagues;
  • Experience working as part of a team in a multicultural environment.

Financial Considerations:

Interns do not receive a salary or remuneration from UNFPA. All costs associated with the internship must be covered by the nominating institution or the interns themselves, including living expenses, accommodation, and travel arrangements. However, a stipend may be provided to assist with basic daily expenses if not financially supported by an institution or program. Proof of medical insurance is required prior to the internship commencement, as UNFPA does not provide medical coverage for interns.

Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews.
