Job Title: Enrolled Nurse

The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for providing direct and/or indirect nursing care to patients in a hospital setting. This role requires the ability to work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and to function independently in a fast-paced environment.

The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for assessing patient needs, developing care plans, and implementing interventions to promote patient safety and well-being. This role also involves assisting the scrub nurse during operations and maintaining a sterile environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing patient care according to the Scope of Practice and assuming total responsibility for these activities.
  • Preparing the theatre and replenishing stock, consignment, and instrument replenishment of the operating room allocated for a procedure list.
  • Contributing to the holistic care of patients.
  • Maintaining the principles of aseptic technique when opening packs and consumables.
  • Helping to control patient and hospital costs through the correct, safe, and economical use of supplies and equipment.
  • Handling equipment, instruments, stock, and medication safely and competently.
  • Effective risk prevention and management when assisting with the positioning of the patient or transfer of the patient to and from the operating table.
  • Effective communication with patients regarding their care.
  • Assisting the anaesthetist during induction of anaesthesia.
  • Executing all procedures according to hospital standards.
  • Ensuring that all patients have an appropriate nursing care plan.
  • Communicating with Health Care Practitioners regarding any change in health status.
  • Compliance with documentation policy.
  • Recording and signing specimen registers.
  • Ongoing audit of health records to ensure compliance.
  • Ensuring all stock is well controlled and managed, charged, and credited appropriately.
  • Maintaining a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
  • Taking responsibility for own nursing actions and professional conduct.
  • Assuming responsibility for own personal and professional development.
  • Projecting a positive professional image.
  • Promoting and maintaining good working and interpersonal relationships with management, colleagues, and doctors.

Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
  • Enrolled Nurse qualification.
  • Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Minimum of 5 years as an enrolled nurse assistant.
  • Post-Op nursing experience is essential.
  • Floor nurse and Anaesthetic experience essential.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and patient safety.
  • Knowledge of Infection Control & Prevention.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Problem-solving, analysis, and judgement.
  • Resilience.
  • Great verbal and written communication and presentation.
  • Customer responsiveness.
  • Professional flexibility in working hours while supporting daily business hours.
