This role offers an exciting opportunity to combine management and field duties, ensuring the sustainable management of wildlife, guiding hunting expeditions, and optimizing farm operations.
Key Responsibilities:- Farm Management & Operations: Oversee daily farm operations, including game management, farming activities, and staff supervision. Implement and maintain effective wildlife conservation practices, ensuring sustainable and ethical game management. Manage the breeding, health, and welfare of game animals, ensuring a balanced and thriving ecosystem. Develop and execute habitat management plans, ensuring proper vegetation, water sources, and predator management. Maintain accurate records of game populations, breeding cycles, and farm activities. Ensure compliance with all legal requirements and regulations related to wildlife, hunting, and land use. Oversee the maintenance of fences, roads, facilities, and other farm infrastructure. Manage the upkeep and proper storage of hunting equipment and vehicles.
- Professional Hunting: Conduct guided hunting expeditions, ensuring a safe, ethical, and enjoyable experience for clients. Provide expert knowledge on local wildlife, hunting regulations, and safety procedures. Guide and assist clients in achieving their hunting goals, ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction. Ensure the ethical and sustainable hunting of game, adhering to all legal and regulatory guidelines. Maintain and manage hunting permits, licenses, and other related paperwork. Ensure the safe and responsible handling of firearms, bow hunting equipment, and other hunting tools. Assist in the processing and preservation of game trophies, including skinning and transporting them as required. Maintain a professional and positive relationship with clients, addressing their needs and concerns.
- Staff Management: Supervise, train, and mentor farm and hunting staff, ensuring they are well-trained, motivated, and adhere to safety and operational protocols. Delegate tasks, manage schedules, and ensure that all team members are performing at their best. Conduct regular staff performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback and development opportunities.
- Health and Safety: Ensure that all safety procedures and protocols are followed during hunting and farm activities. Respond to any emergency situations and handle wildlife-related issues (e.g., animal health, predator control). Regularly inspect equipment, tools, and vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.
- Financial Management: Prepare and manage budgets for farm operations and hunting activities. Oversee income generated from hunting safaris, game sales, and other sources, ensuring profitability. Manage procurement of farm supplies, hunting gear, and equipment. Conduct regular financial reporting and provide insights for improving cost-efficiency.
- Marketing & Client Relations: Promote and market the game farm to attract clients for hunting safaris and game viewing. Maintain and develop relationships with international and local clients, ensuring repeat business. Attend and represent the farm at relevant events, exhibitions, and trade shows. Respond to client inquiries, manage bookings, and ensure a seamless guest experience.
- Wildlife Conservation & Environmental Sustainability: Implement conservation strategies that promote biodiversity and the long-term health of the game farm. Work with conservation bodies and stakeholders to ensure the farm operates within environmental best practices. Develop and implement sustainable land management strategies to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
- Anti-Poaching Responsibilities: Conduct regular patrols of the farm to detect and prevent poaching activities. Ensure that all key areas, including game populations, water sources, and fence lines, are regularly monitored for signs of illegal activity. Oversee and coordinate an anti-poaching team (if applicable), ensuring they are well-trained, equipped, and follow best practices in anti-poaching operations. Implement surveillance measures such as trail cameras, drones, and other monitoring technologies to help detect illegal activities. Report any suspicious activities immediately to the relevant authorities. Ensure that all infrastructure, including fences, gates, and perimeter boundaries, is well-maintained and secure to prevent poachers from gaining access to the farm. Build and maintain strong relationships with local law enforcement, wildlife rangers, and conservation authorities to improve anti-poaching efforts. Train all farm and hunting staff on identifying and reporting potential poaching activities, wildlife laws, and emergency procedures for dealing with poachers or poaching-related incidents. Engage with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and poaching prevention. Maintain accurate records of poaching incidents, patrols, and preventive measures taken, including documentation on any arrests or legal actions. In the event of poaching activity, lead and assist in a swift and safe response, including securing the area, assisting authorities, and ensuring evidence is preserved. Develop and implement effective anti-poaching strategies, reviewing and adjusting as needed to ensure maximum protection of the wildlife on the farm.
- Proven experience as a Game Farm Manager and/or Professional Hunter.
- Professional hunting qualifications, including valid hunting licenses and permits.
- In-depth knowledge of wildlife management, hunting regulations, and ethical hunting practices.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with experience in staff supervision and team-building.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain client relationships.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also collaborating with a team.
- Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting and cost management.
- Sound knowledge of the Limpopo region's game species, terrain, and weather conditions.
- Good physical fitness and ability to work in remote, rugged environments.
- Fluent in English (knowledge of Afrikaans and/or other languages is a plus).
- Own transportation and a valid driver's license (4x4 vehicle experience preferred).
- Matric minimum.
- Degree or diploma in wildlife management, conservation, or a related field advantageous.
- Advanced qualifications in professional hunting.
- First aid and emergency response certification advantageous.
- Knowledge of sustainable farming practices.
