Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Agricultural Operations Director to lead our Factories and Prepacking facilities across Africa.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the long-term sustainability of our business by overseeing all value-add activities within accepted norms and procedures.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Factories and Prepacking Facilities Growth Strategy Development:
    • Improve productivity in factories and prepacking facilities.
    • Establish a central admin function for all Factories and Prepacking facilities.
    • Develop and implement a Five-year growth and expansion strategy/plan.
    • Evaluate and standardize technical processes across all Factories & Prepacking facilities.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to build company image and reputation.
    • Conduct industry benchmarks on cost, technology, and people trends.
  • Financial & Business Management:
    • Participate in setting-up budgets and allocating resources.
    • Prepare monthly finance reports for management insight.
    • Contribute to business profitability by managing people and resources to achieve objectives.
  • People Management:
    • Instill discipline within the management and labor force.
    • Set performance agreements, manage subordinates, coach, and mentor teams.
    • Develop successors for critical positions.
    • Create a healthy labor relations environment through employee engagement.
  • Health & Safety:
    • Accept and execute 16(2) and GMR2(1) role and responsibilities.
    • Implement HSMS and drive hazard identification and risk assessments.
    • Support and maintain ISO45001 Accreditation in South African Production Units.
  • Capital Projects:
    • Engage with operations managers for project requirements.
    • Review and approve capital projects (Capex Requests).
    • Setup budget and execute projects timeously and within budget.
    • Oversee design process by both internal and external engineers.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Evaluate packing practices and develop process flows.
    • Implement profit enhancement projects and measure water usage.
    • Secure grower partnerships and increase volume by 5% year on year.
    • Work with the Continuous Improvement Department.
  • Corporate Governance, Risk and Compliance:
    • Ensure statutory obligations are prepared and maintained.
    • Enforce ethical business practices and ensure compliance to corporate governance policies.
    • Create an inclusive culture.
  • Operational Activities:
    • Develop and implement data management systems and reporting.
    • Develop and implement maintenance strategies for equipment.
    • Standardize Factories & Prepacking facilities across the continent.
    • Manage warehouse operations and stock control.
  • Accreditation Management:
    • Ensure compliance for all relevant accreditations.
    • Manage audit processes, from booking to internal audits.
    • Coordinate audit-related activities.
  • Education:
    • Degree in Engineering or Operations Management or other relevant fields.
    • Postgraduate qualification advantageous.
    • Fruit processing and packing experience desirable.
  • Experience:
    • At least 10-15 years' experience in factories and prepacking facilities, preferably agriculture.
    • At least 5 years' experience in 16.(2) role or similar Health and Safety roles.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Technically competent to manage export subtropical fruit business.
    • Good people management skills across business levels.
    • Detailed knowledge of accreditation requirements for local and export markets.
    • Financial planning and control.
    • Knowledge of legal framework for farming operations across Africa.
    • High levels of computer literacy.
