Distribution Network Specialist

Key Responsibilities
  • Construct and maintain the electricity distribution network to ensure reliable supply of power to residents.
  • Provide technical support and advice to contractors, staff, architects, consultants, and other departments to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Plan and schedule work for staff and contractors to optimize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Support and promote safety in the workplace by adhering to codes of practice, system operating regulations, and safety rules.
  • Attend to emergency work and breakdowns, and be available for standby as required to ensure prompt resolution of issues.
  • Operate medium voltage equipment to facilitate maintenance and repair activities.
  • Motivate, train, and monitor contractors and staff performance to achieve high standards of quality and efficiency.
  • Responsible for maintaining effective industrial relations to foster a positive and productive work environment.
  • Monitor and control expenditure to ensure optimal resource utilization.
Essential Requirements
  • Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician) qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Be in possession of a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a Further Education and Training College registered with the Department of Education.
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate or be trained within 6 months from date of appointment.
  • Must be authorized in terms of eThekwini Electricity Systems Operating Regulations to operate on Medium Voltage Systems up to and including 11kV or be in a position to be authorized within 9 months of appointment if required to undertake switching.
  • Must have two valid Electrician competencies (OHM, UGM & SS) as applicable to the division or branch, in addition to the switching competency.
  • May be required to pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge of Construction, Operations, Maintenance, and Distribution systems.
  • 4 years relevant post-apprenticeship experience in the Electricity Supply and Distribution industry.
