Job Summary: ProBono.Org is a dynamic NGO that works with the private legal profession to provide pro bono legal services to the poor and contributes to ensuring access to justice for impoverished people living in South Africa.

Job Description:

We seek a Legal Intern to join our team and contribute to our mission of providing pro bono legal services to the poor and ensuring access to justice for marginalized communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interview and assess matters in terms of ProBono.Org's criteria, consulting with staff attorneys on the best strategy for dealing with matters.
  • Prepare detailed briefs, memos, and instructions for legal practitioners in matters requiring pro bono legal assistance.
  • Manage all matters from consultation to closure or referral to an attorney or advocate.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with NGOs, CBOs, CAOs, law clinics, and other pro bono and public interest law initiatives.
  • Conduct legal research and handle other details in preparation of matters, as needed.
  • Present and facilitate community and attorney workshops on behalf of ProBono.Org.

Qualifications, Experience, and Competencies:

  • Appropriate law qualification (LLB) with some practical experience.
  • Knowledge of SA's socio-economic environment and its impact on legal justice.
  • Demonstrable commitment to public interest law and social justice.
  • Proactive attitude and enthusiasm for ProBono.Org's mission and vision.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent drafting, writing, and editing skills.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint).
