- About the role- As science and analytics leader your work is a canvas for change, painted with the data you explore and the insights you uncover. Together, we can transform financial confidence across Africa, one insight & ML model at a time.- What you’ll achieve in the first 12 months?- **We have successfully transformed 3 business units in Sanlam FinTech into an insights and ML-led organizations.** Successfully deploy insights and machine learning across our business, from the financial & digital products we develop to the growth campaigns we run. Collaborate with the commercial leaders in every business unit to budget for and introduce data science and analytics capabilities into their teams and insights and ML models into their products and processes. Success will be measured by the successful activation of full data scientists and analysts’ resources towards the business units OKRs, and the successful deployment of at least 1 ML model into a client facing product.
- **We can attract and incubate world class data talent**:Scope roles, clarify needs, build an appetite for investing in data scientists. Ensure successful hiring for these roles, with success measured by the attainment of company objectives and the retention rate of new hires, specifically their 12-month anniversary milestone.
- **We have created the ideal environment for high performance data-enriched teams.** Continuously surface any challenges faced by the data folks embedded into their commercial teams, and lead initiatives to overcome them. Surface issues affecting team motivation and impact and implementing necessary changes to our regular rhythms monthly. Success will be measured by the absence of recurring themes for improvement in data-wide retros.

Facilitate opportunities for team members to advance their skills and knowledge as data professionals. Success in this area will be measured by the team's growth and achievements in their respective fields.
- **Be like Yoda** Primarily lead by mentoring, supporting, and activating through others, but unblock the team when they hit complex analytical barriers. Dive in to clarify and simplify or otherwise advise on a first move to help them get going (and then get better) so they can continue to own their domain autonomously. Success will be measured in the number of consecutive monthly retros where the team has been blocked due to a lack of clarity and/or formalization around the problems they need to solve.

**Qualification and Experience**
