Junior Economist

Cape Town, South Africa Econometrix Pty Ltd Full time

**Company Info**:
Econometrix is a member of the ETM Group and South Africa's leading independent economic consultancy. We look beyond buzzwords, technical jargon and the stories of the day to deliver real insight that allows business leaders to interpret and react to macroeconomic risk.

**What We're Looking For**:
Econometrix is looking for a Junior Economist to support the team's deliverables. Previous experience or show of initiative in the field of economics or financial markets would be preferable. Responsibilities will include:

- Monitor and report on economic data outcomes
- Prepare and schedule upcoming deliverables
- Work with the team to construct presentations
- Chart creation and formatting of team reports
- Research to support larger projects
- Behind-the-scenes administration work
- Contribute to webinars, podcasts and client engagements

It is crucial that you come with a proactive attitude. You will be called upon to be organised and deliver on time - deadlines are sacred.

We need someone who brings a range of skills - an excellent communicator with strong verbal and written command of English and a sharp eye for detail. You will also need to be highly numerate and be completely comfortable navigating Microsoft Windows and Office, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

A background in economics is necessary but not sufficient. Can you design an eye-catching presentation? Can you work through Excel formulas? Can you synthesise information quickly, and can you think out of the box to interpret data in a way that builds a narrative for clients?

You will be exposed to forecast discussions and other strategic economic debates, but you will also be expected to do administrative work when necessary. Both skills are important.

Ideally, this role will suit someone with a knack for economics but also a broad range of other interests. Someone who asks questions, is well-read and engaged with the world, its politics, and its history.

**What we offer**:
The opportunity to work with a wealth of independent economic wisdom: Independence means our team needs to look at reality without political, academic or social bias. We combine proprietary analysis with rigorous theory to deliver cutting-edge insight into the South African economy and its global backdrop.

Your contribution will be tangible, and upskilling you is necessary to drive success. You will receive hands-on mentoring from individuals across the entire team at all levels of seniority and in all business areas.

There is ample opportunity to grow. Econometrix is a small team, and we offer the opportunity to work closely with us across all levels of the business, from research to product development.

ETM group covers not just macroeconomic analysis but financial markets as well, meaning you will have exposure to numerous avenues of learning; we do not silo you.

**What we need from you**:
A degree (and clear interest in) economics. Honours or higher and a focus on macroeconomics would be preferable.

Excellent communication skills (written as well as verbal). Must be able to summarise information.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Eviews, Python, R, Macrobond, and

Bloomberg Terminal are advantageous but not required.

Cape Town based with the ability to work from an office in the Newlands.

A generally great attitude.

**Starting date**:
**Interested?**

Successful applicants will be contacted.

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Cape Town, Western Cape: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (required)

**Education**:

- Bachelors (required)

**Language**:

- English (required)

Application Deadline: 2023/07/07
