The Head of Model Development for Secured Lending will lead the Model Development Function for the Retail Mortgages and Retail Vehicle and Asset Finance businesses. The incumbent is expected to put processes, frameworks and structures in place to facilitate the design, development and embedment of market-leading Impairment and Regulatory Capital models, which serve as business-enablers to achieve market-leading financial results.

**Job Description**:
The incumbent will lead the Model Development function for Retail Credit Risk Models, with a specific focus on Absa’s new Product Solutions business unit, comprising the Retail Mortgages and Retail Vehicle and Asset Finance businesses. These businesses make up a significant portion of the bank’s exposure, and are key strategic focus areas for the bank in its intent to become an industry leader. The incumbent will provide thought leadership and strategic direction to influence innovation in model methodologies, optimize model development data and architecture, revitalize model development frameworks and set procedures in place to facilitate optimal efficiency throughout the model development lifecycle

The role will require wide-spread, cross-functional management
- and coordination of internal business stakeholders. This also includes presentations at board committees such as GCIC and Group Models Committee. In addition, the role requires consistent engagements with external stakeholders. This includes the bank’s external audit teams, representing the bank in Banking Association of South Africa (BASA) modelling committees, management of external consultants as well as service providers to Absa (such as credit bureaus). It will further require in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements, staying abreast of regulatory changes and interpretation of how that impacts the processes and procedures, not only within their own function, but throughout the entire model development landscape (which includes other functions within the bank).

The incumbent will take responsibility for development and continuous improvements in the model environment of the business unit, whilst maintaining consistency in core methodologies within the Retail businesses (where sensible) and ensure the highest level of compliance to internal and external regulations and policies. The individual must work with cross-functional internal stakeholders to identify improvements in the function’s operating model to meet business needs, whilst continuously ensuring alignment to the strategic focus of the business. This will require frequent review of the operating model, whilst ensuring mínimal disruption to the efficiency of teams within the function.
