**POSITION: SENIOR MATERIALS TECHNICIAN (18 Months FTC)**

Our client has a vacancy for a Senior Materials Technician in its Transportation Infrastructure Division in Cape Town. The role is required for a national roads project in East London.

**Requirements**:

- National Diploma or BTech in Civil Engineering
- Experience in road construction materials laboratory testing
- Minimum 8 years of post-graduate experience
- Experience on national roads projects would be an advantage
- Previous experience as senior materials technician or laboratory manager would be beneficial
- Have experience with MS Office Suite
- Driver’s licence essential

**Key responsibilities**:

- Responsible for acceptance control of construction materials used on site
- Supervision of the client’s acceptance control road materials laboratory on site
- Manage materials testing workflow
- Ensure the site laboratory performs to agreed testing timetable
- Inspection and quality control of the contractor’s works
- Review test results and manage acceptance control process
- Arrange duplicate testing of materials
- Review and provide feedback on mix designs
- Reports directly to the Resident Engineer
- Assist the RE with administrative duties
- Prepare and submit monthly materials and laboratory reports to the RE
- Prepare earthworks and layerworks progress sheets
- Prepare and update materials testing data packs for as-built purposes in accordance with the client’s requirements
- Prioritise, schedule, perform and document field and laboratory testing to evaluate the acceptability of materials used on the structures and road construction
- Interpret engineering test methodologies in accordance with COTO/COLTO, TMH, TRH, TG-series, SANS, and other relevant standards
- Maintain records of all testing performed in the field and laboratory, and compile material as-built documentation
- Monitor the calibration and serviceability of laboratory and field-testing equipment, and liaise with commercial laboratories
- Resolve issues with Contractor and Engineer regarding non-compliance with materials specifications, and make recommendations for corrective action that may be needed
- Communicate with the Employer’s materials staff, and ensure compliance with the Employer’s reporting and other requirements

**Key performance indicators**:

- Manage site materials laboratory
- Manage quality assurance documentation and workflow
- Interpretation of test results
- Resolution of disputes
- Compilation of materials test and as-built reports

**Experience**:

- Experience as SMT or laboratory manager would be beneficial
- Knowledge and experience of road building materials, including bituminous surfacing
- Skilled in material testing and material evaluation

**Location**:

- Site based (East London)
