SUMMARY OF ROLE

The Assistant Pharmacy Manager is responsible to assist the Pharmacy Manager with the overall management of the Pharmacy Department.

The incumbent will assist with managing all related pharmacy services and activities according to the policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives of theGroup.

The Assistant Pharmacy Manager will be responsible for managing the Clinical and Quality aspects.

The Assistant Pharmacy Manager will manage the Retail pharmacy, all services and activities according to the policies, procedures and objectives of the Group.

OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

The duties of the post include, but are not limited, to the following, and are carried out in accordance with Netcare’s Policies and Procedures. The objective of this post is to render and promote quality patient care in accordance with hospital standards and policies and to give on the spot training to subordinates.

Cost effective pharmaceutical care;
Assist the Pharmacy Manager to deliver effective pharmaceutical care in both hospital and retail environments;
In the absence of the Pharmacy Manager and the Operational Assistant Pharmacy Manager, ensure effective management of patient pharmaceutical care in the hospital, comprising both hospital and retail pharmacy environments as well as the Billings department and Stock control departments;
Ensure that pharmaceutical standards, quality assurance and risk management are maintained within the hospital;
Assist the Pharmacy Manager with the management of the pharmacy within the parameters set out by the South African Pharmacy Council and the Good Pharmacy Practice of South Africa;
Assist the Pharmacy Manager to deliver an effective quality pharmaceutical service specifically with regards to implementing clinical and quality related initiatives.

Healthcare Environment

Keeping abreast of changes that affect the local business environment;
Keep up to date with regards to medical aids rules and requirements;
Keep updated with new developments in the pharmaceutical field.

Clinical and Quality Initiatives

Be responsible for implementing, managing and maintaining all aspects of antibiotic stewardship in the hospital;
Drive medication safety across the hospital by implementing, managing and maintaining all aspects of safe medicine practice through collaboration with nursing;
Take responsibility for implementing and maintaining core standard requirements and ISO in the pharmacy, collaborating with nursing where required;
Ensure correct CSA, FAD, POPIA and legal requirements are followed with regard to medication, non-dispensed scripts, co-payment file import, script tracking file, registration with SAPC, premises, security, development and education, manufacturing, thermos-liable medicines, control of medicine, controlled drugs and quality improvement;
Drive implementation of quality directives/best practices/alerts concerning pharmaceutical service in the hospital;
Identify and implement hospital specific quality improvement programs in pharmacy with special focus on improved patient care;
Lead the pharmacy team in preparing and submitting abstracts to the relevant quality related conferences;
Assist with submission of head office reports on all clinical aspects on a monthly basis.

Staff Management and Performance Review

Ensure the adequate allocation of pharmacy resources to sustain the functioning of the retail pharmacy;
Completion of performance appraisals and performance management of retail personnel.

Managing Employee Relations

**Develop and maintain sound employee relations which includes**:
Training and all development of all staff;
Conduct training needs analysis, co-ordinate and conduct training and ensure proper manpower planning.

EDUCATION

A relevant Pharmaceutical qualification (B. Pharm. Degree or Dip. Pharm);
Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council;
A relevant management qualification will be an advantage.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Sound knowledge of Private Hospital Pharmacy business operations;
Advanced level of Computer literacy;
Previous experience in the management of a Private Hospital Pharmacy would be advantageous.

KNOWLEDGE

Assist with management reports;
Sound knowledge of clinical pharmacy including antibiotic stewardship;
Assist with preparation of all aspects of stock take and cyclical counts;
Assist with managing the process of stock take in pharmacy and capturing of retail stock take data;
Verify all hospital stock take data;
Provide in-service training for Pharmacists and Pharmacist assistants;
Assist with the management of the pharmacy operational areas in the absence of the Operational Assistant PM.
