Who are we?

The Group's four business clusters (Sanlam Life and Savings, Sanlam Investment Group, Sanlam Emerging Markets and Santam) house the Group's business operations. The Group Office provides strategic direction and support to the four clusters, assisting them in realising their strategies and meeting their business objectives. The Group Office is responsible for governance and for the Group's centralised functions, which include: Finance, Actuarial and Risk Management, Strategy, Human Resources, Market Development and Brand Services.
What will you do?
This role exists in our Group Tax Governance department, that acts as the Sanlam Group Tax function’s main interface/liaison with all operational businesses in the Sanlam Group across all four business clusters (“Clients”).
The Group Tax Governance department is responsible for tax governance/risk management and tax compliance oversight. Apart from technical support in respect of most corporate taxes (direct and indirect) applicable to the financial industry, the engagement with Clients can also include oversight and review of PAYE, third party reporting and withholding taxes.
This role offers a challenging blend of tax technical and compliance responsibilities with a special focus on close collaboration with business units throughout the Sanlam Group, often requiring a more operational and hands-on approach based on business (and Industry) knowledge and insight. The role offers exposure to both the insurance (life and general) and non-insurance businesses in the Sanlam Group and across most corporate taxes affecting South African businesses. It will also include assistance with the preparation and/or review of tax returns and related records and computations.
**Reporting to the Head**: Group Tax Governance, the incumbent will work closely with colleagues in the Group Tax Governance department as well as the wider Sanlam Group Tax function. What will make you successful in this role?
**The incumbent’s responsibilities include the following**:
Take primary responsibility for the management of the overall tax engagement with Clients, including
Monitoring the status of general tax compliance and address areas of concern
Assisting management with managing the tax risk framework
Reporting tax related matters in accordance with existing frameworks
Pro-active contributions to improve existing processes and optimal implementation of new initiatives in as far as it relates to tax
Maintaining a strong and dynamic relationship.
Provide tax compliance support and oversight, including reviews of income tax calculations (year-end procedure), ITR14 and IT14SD returns, provisional tax calculations and returns, etc.
Monitor, advise and coordinate responses to SARS queries.
Assess impact, advise and (where applicable) monitor implementation of industry or business specific tax changes or recommendations.
Represent Sanlam Group on appropriate industry forums, where applicable. Qualification and Experience
Chartered Accountant (S.A)
Post-graduate tax qualification
At least four to five years of relevant experience in a tax practice and/or corporate tax function after completion of internship/articles
Proven business knowledge and general understanding of the financial services industry.
The incumbent should have good working knowledge and experience in the following core areas:
