The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.

IED seeks to appoints a suitably qualified Research Specialist as a _permanent member of staff_ to be based in Cape Town, Durban or Pretoria. The position is situated within a working group focused on **_City-region Economies_**. The main objective of this research theme is to explore contemporary opportunities and challenges facing cities in seeking to boost economic growth and ensure widely shared prosperity. What are the foundations of urban economic success in the 21st century and for cities in the Global South in particular? What obstacles need to be tackled to harness the potential of urbanisation to lift people out of poverty and improve their well-being? What are the interactions across spatial regions - rural and urban areas; firms, suppliers and customers; housing, transport and labour markets; and infrastructure and property development which make up the urban system? All of these inter-relationships and connections are closely intertwined with wider regional and global economic flows which also need to be understood.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- A PhD in **Economics** or **Development Studies** or **Data Science** or **Urban Planning** or **Geography** or **Urban Studies** with knowledge of urbanisation and spatial transformation;
- Some research and management experience, preferably in a research institution or a university;
- At least 3 peer reviewed publications (books, books chapters, journal articles) in accredited journals, most of which should be sole or first authored;
- Excellent writing skills for drafting briefing papers, reports, academic publications and for wider public dissemination of research findings;
- **Strong statistical, quantitative research and/or GIS skills** for data analysis and management;
- Willingness to learn how to secure funding for research
- Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
- Enthusiasm to manage, mentor and train junior researchers; and
- Ability to work in a team on multidisciplinary research projects and to grow into leadership roles.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Design, manage and conduct high quality research under the broad umbrella of city-region economies and spatial economies that has both strategic and policy relevance;
- Stimulate public debate and promote evidence-based policy on issues that relates to economic development and equality;
- Experience and/or interest in writing research grant proposals in the thematic area of city-region economies;
- Manage research projects and develop expertise in leading long-term research projects;
- Deliver high-quality results and reports to budget and deadline;
- Engage civil society to ensure uptake of evidence to transform economic participation outcomes;
- Produce high quality knowledge outputs through publishing in accredited refereed journals, books, and book chapters;
- Partner with other team members to ensure research impact through government engagement, policy briefs and research reviews;
- Communicate research findings across media platforms and at academic conferences and forums; and
- Develop research skills and competences through formal and informal training for self and others.
