**Main purpose of the job**:
**Location**:

- **Wits Vaccines & Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto - Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- _Research program development and implementation including Programme Management and epidemiology oversight_
- Conceptualize and design research projects as needed (including protocols and SOPs)
- Conduct literature reviews to determine what research has been done on knowledge gaps
- Collaboratively prepare research proposals and funding proposals
- Obtain ethics approval from relevant regulatory committees/bodies
- Develop and design research and project management tools and process flows and obtain necessary approvals
- Train relevant project team/s and other relevant staff on the requirements for specific studies
- Facilitate community engagement strategies required for specific studies and engage Community Advisory
- Groups as required
- Monitor the progress of research projects through ongoing liaison with Study Coordinators and teams
- Collaborate closely with other investigators and project managers on related studies within the cluster and provide input, advice, or guidance on study design, protocol, research tools, data analysis, and other research-related activities
- Provide expert advice and guidance on research database design, review specifications, and testing plan (if applicable)
- _Management of research studies_
- Actively manage a portfolio of studies or projects (example including but not limited to: CHAMPS Data to Action projects and/or WITS VIDA passive and active surveillance systems)
- Effective and efficient project planning including timelines, budgets where applicable, deliverables, dependencies, and resource planning
- Manage teams and resources required including cross-functional inputs and shared staff or services
- Implement, document, and track project deliverables and milestones
- Coordinate and conduct project-related training and skills assessments as well as provide site
- or field-specific support in the case of multiple sites and/or fieldwork
- Organize and attend or lead meetings, presentations, and calls as required
- Drive all regular internal and external regular and ad hoc report preparation and delivery
- Collaborate with colleagues across teams toward effective project planning and delivery
- Identify areas for improvement in process flow and project management and collaborate with research leads/senior management to initiate and drive process improvements
- Coordinate any study or research communications/marketing requirements
- Identify study risks and mitigate accordingly within policies and SOPs
- Provide strategic input as and when required by research leadership and executive office and work closely with senior management to drive study and division research objectives
- _Research analysis_
- Review research protocol/s and obtain the background of the study/ies
- Develop, present, obtain feedback from stakeholders and revise the analysis plan
- Perform data analysis, prepare tables and write up methodologies used and results
- Contribute to and prepare publications
- Compile relevant reports and research findings to address questions arising from meetings, management or donors
- Disseminate research results appropriately
- Stay abreast of literature relevant to research activities within the organization
- _Capacity development_
- Contribute towards the development of team/company knowledge by identifying relevant training needs and topics
- Develop relevant training material and presentations
- Conduct ad hoc research training interventions i.e., Journal Clubs, Writing Series, VIDA Research Methodology Course
- Participate and actively contribute to the STATA users’ group
- Participate actively in research leadership groups and forums as required
- Student supervision (to be confirmed/as may be applicable)

- Lead cross-functional teams to promote productivity within projects; effectively supervise and manage staff duties, and maintain sound labor relations
