Description

A role has become available for a Tissue Culture Graduate based in our Biotechnology Research Department in Kempton Park. The purpose of this role is to execute laboratory analysis and assist with molecular breeding functions in the Biotechnology Centre in support of Plennegy Research breeding programmes and seed production activities. Specifically focusing on the Tissue Culture section of the Biotechnology Centre.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Responsible for general housekeeping in the laboratory
- Responsible for making up all media as per instructions and keeping a record of all media-related activities, including the amount made up within a given period
- Assist in the entire onion double haploid production process. This will include but not be limited to, flower sample preparation, initiation, cleaning to contain/ prevent contamination, plantlet subculture and acclimatization
- Assist in the entire pepper double haploid production process. This will include but not be limited to, planting pepper seeds, ensuring pepper plants are in good health and are optimally producing buds, bud sample preparation, initiation, cleaning to contain/ prevent contamination, plantlet subculture and acclimatization
- Assist with routine seed QC testing
- Teamwork: assist other members of the team with their tasks when needed
- Assist with routine and discovery research
- Updating of laboratory journal daily
- Discuss projects needs and deadlines with Lab Manager, Supervisor, and other departments
- Assist with processing samples on the Amphasys pollen instrument
- Assist with method development and implementation of other special projects
- Write and update standard operating procedures for laboratory actions
- Troubleshooting any problems that may occur during the execution of projects
- Keep updated with new molecular protocols/ techniques that could be applicable to Plennegy Research’s Biotechnology Laboratory. This may done through various mediums such as reading journal articles and webinars

**Requirements**:
**REQUIREMENTS**:

- Degree or diploma in agriculture, crop sciences, plant biology, biological sciences, biotechnology, or microbiology
- Require excellent organizational and innovative thinking skills.
- Attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills
- Basic level of MS Office programs
- Good record keeping and data collection skills
- Good understanding of aseptic technique and media preparation
- Growing and maintaining plants

Great additional skills:

- Experience working with diverse techniques such as microscopy, microbiological culture, tissue culture
