**POSITION**:LIBRARIAN**

As a research-intensive university, we are in the process of re-conceptualizing libraries to align with our needs in the 21st century. We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified, experienced and innovative person for the position of Librarian to care of and make available to library users the special collections, viz. Early Africana (including maps), Early and Fine Printed Collection, the Landau Hebrew Collection, and the Oppenheimer Portuguese Collection

**Qualifications and Required Skills**:

- B.Bibl, BInf degree OR Bachelor’s Degree plus Postgraduate Diploma in LIS qualification and 5 years’ relevant professional experience with conservation and preservation

**OR**Bachelor’s degree with African Studies or History plus Postgraduate Diploma in LIS or Postgraduate Diploma in Archives and Records Management and 5 years relevant professional experience with conservation and preservation

**Skills**:
- High level of interpersonal skills for internal and external interactions
- Have a strong sense of history and cultural inheritances.
- Continuous learning to broaden and deepen special collections knowledge
- Manual dexterity to carry out conservation work according to accepted current procedures and mounting exhibitions
**Knowledge**:
- Awareness of special collections professional guidelines e.g. “ACRL Code of Ethics for Special Collections Librarians”
- Knowledge of the areas and resources covered in the collections
- Current conservation procedures and techniques
- Current digitization, preservation and conservation procedures and techniques
- Current trends in mounting scholarly exhibitions

**Responsibilities**:
- Developing and making accessible the Special Collections
- _ _by initiating the acquisition of rare materials using a range of tools and services including reviews, auctioneers’, dealers’ and library catalogues
- Cataloguing of old and new items, including maps and other pictorial materials
- Preparing and maintaining guides to the collection to facilitate access
- Providing reference inquiry and information retrieval service in all Special Collections
- Conducting brief interviews with users to assess the information needs
- Preserving, conserving and restoring the Special Collections by monitoring and ensuring appropriate library environmental conditions for the safe keeping and long term preservation of collections
- Supervising the use of valuable and fragile items
- Performing in-house repairs and special treatment of damaged items
- Ensuring rare and special materials are safe at all times
- Participating in the Library’s digitisation projects
- Assessing and selecting Early Collections and Africana materials for digitisation
- Analysing the bibliographic details of materials and identifying appropriate metadata required for the digital library
- Providing a public relations service to promote Early Africana and Special Collections and materials by preparing, mounting and curating exhibitions of selected materials from the Special Collections on a regular basis on particular themes and to mark specific events
- Conducting tours for various users as required
