Manager: Crystal Characterisation Laboratory

Duties/Pligte- Managing a multi-user, multi-instrument laboratory for characterising crystals (X-ray diffraction, microscopy and thermal analysis);- Maintaining and repairing instruments- Training users in advanced diffraction methods and thermal analysis- Financial management (billing users, and purchasing equipment and consumables);- Managing the online booking system;- Operating and maintaining a liquid nitrogen generator;-

- Dienskristallografie (wat bydraes tot die skryf van manuskripte insluit).Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes- PhD with a significant crystallography component;- Proven track record of managing an instrument facility, including training users and managing a booking system;- Proven experience in single-crystal data collection, structure solution and refinement;- Proven experience in powder X-ray diffraction (data collection and analysis);- Demonstrated experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a liquid nitrogen generator;- Advanced ability to use APEX4, SHELX, CrystalExplorer, TOPAS, X-Seed and/or Olex2 software;- Advanced ability to use the Cambridge Structural Database and associated software;- Experience in the use of a diamond anvil cell: cell preparation, crystal mounting, crystal centring, data collection and refinement;- Proven ability to identify and process twinned diffraction data;- Advanced knowledge of symmetry, space groups and diffraction theory;- The ability to train others with respect to X-ray crystallography (including symmetry, space groups, diffraction physics, data collection and processing, structure solution/refinement,

reporting) and thermal analysis;Proven contribution to writing high-level publications;- Excellent organisational skills;- Excellent verbal and written skills in English.

- Gevorderde kennis van simmetrie, ruimtegroepe en diffraksieteorie;-
- Die vermoë om ander op te lei met betrekking tot X-straalkristallografie (met inbegrip van simmetrie, ruimtegroepe, diffraksiefisika, data-insameling en -verwerking,struktuuroplossing/-verfyning, verslaggewing) en termiese analise;Bewese bydrae met die skryf van hoëvlak publikasies;-
