ESG Specialist (Sustainability Reporting / ESG Assurance / Finance Sector) - Cape Town, South Africa

Our client, a leading African investment company that focuses on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, is currently seeking an ESG Specialist. This role entails utilizing the ESG framework to assess the sustainability of companies and countries, considering factors such as climate change, human rights, and adherence to laws. Their mission is to partner with sustainable, locally owned financial services providers in Sub-Saharan Africa, supporting their independence while providing financial expertise and long-term capital for their prosperity. Their hands-on approach, combined with in-depth local knowledge and minority shareholding, empowers these partners to achieve financial sustainability and become strong contributors to the economy. As the ESG Specialist, you will play a crucial role in driving sustainable practices and creating positive impact in the region.

**Responsibilities**:
Working closely with the ESG Lead, the Value Creation Team, the Head of Banking Development, and the Investment Team, you will:
Monitor and help manage ESG risk in the company portfolio.
Undertake periodic field visit supervision missions to client companies within the portfolio.
Provide technical mentoring and support to sustainability team members within portfolio of companies.
Collate and analyze impact metrics from the company's portfolio of clients.
Help report on ESG risk and value creation to stakeholders (the board and shareholders etc.) on a quarterly and annual basis.
Play a key role in measuring, analyzing, and supporting the positive impact that portfolio companies are making within their regions of operation.
Support with the administration, monitoring, and reporting of the Technical Assistance Facility.
Where required, support other members of the Investment and Value Creation Teams with ad hoc tasks associated with portfolio management and/or the investment process.

**Requirements**:
Bachelor and/or master's degree in a discipline relevant to sustainable development, with good academic record.
5 - 7 years' relevant experience in the field of sustainability reporting / ESG assurance / environmental and social risk management, ideally in the investment / finance sector or consulting space advising the finance sector.

**Prior experience with one or more of the following**:
Auditing / due diligence against the IFC Performance Standards / World Bank Group Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines.
Corporate sustainability / impact reporting or assurance (GRI, SASB, IRIS+ etc.). Where experience in one of the above is lacking, at a minimum, a genuine interest and willingness to upskill in the area is required.

In-country field experience in Sub Sahara Africa.
Strong report writing and data analysis skills.
Spoken French, Portuguese or Swahili would be an added advantage but is not a prerequisite.
A passion for sustainable development and interest in contributing to the sustainable socio-economic development of the Sub Sahara Africa region.
A willingness and availability for periodic travel in the Sub Sahara African region.

**Benefits and Contractual information**:
Initial 6-month contract basis with a view to permanent appointment after the term.
