The Clinical Nurse Specialist focuses on the delivery of quality competent nursing care. The incumbent acts as a clinical resource and leader in a particular clinical specialty, performing functions at an advanced level competently and consistently.

Sound and contemporary knowledge of the area of specialty, together with an advanced understanding of professional nursing, health care delivery and programme planning, allows the CNS to fulfil the following primary roles:
1. Advanced clinical care

2. Consultation as a source of expert knowledge

3. Clinical teaching of staff and learners

4. Research

5. Leadership
- Acts as shift leader for the post that shift that he / she is responsible for
- Responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of competent nursing care during the shift for which the CNS is responsible
- Supports and supervises less experienced staff, acts as a preceptor for new staff, and assists in the clinical teaching of learners
- Provide leadership in the clinical situation, and acts as an influential role model for best competent professional practice
- Contribute to the ongoing research, development and review of best practice in the specialty
- Actively participate as a member of a team to achieve goals
- Co-operate and collaborate with other hospital departments to provide appropriate support services.
- Acts as a resource in the clinical specialty as a result of advanced and broad knowledge and skills in that specialty
- Allocate staff members in a manner that promotes optimal use of staff to provide appropriate nursing care for the individual patient regarding his / her needs and specialised skills needed by the nursing staff member
- Adjust staff levels to provide for acuity level needs
- Active involvement in own professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge
- Keep up to date with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures
- Work effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships that are mutually beneficial.
- Develop collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goal
- Maintain and encourage effective communication and interaction within the unit, other members of the multi-disciplinary team and the public.
- Manage HR costs in such a way as to ensure cost effective quality care including overtime, temporary staff etc.
- Control of asset register
- Manage all costs emanating from the theatre
- Conduct Stock Management, Stock Control and managing consumables.
- Order stock from preferred suppliers and conduct cycle counts
- Manage charging and billing.
- Evaluate equipment lifespan versus risk and Development of Capital expenditure Budget
- Complete Capex equipment budget, compile annual capex budget as Theatre and Doctor Requirement.
- Ensure correct procurement process management is followed as per the Standard Operating Procedure Conduct Stock Management, Stock Control and Managing consumables, including stock counts monthly
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures regarding the management of stock
- Conduct monthly calculation and management of stock days
- Ensure the unit is providing safe, cost effective quality patient care in line with the Clinical Governance strategy and evidence based practice
- Evaluate the patient’s journey through patient experience and stakeholder input
- Manage patient complaints and satisfaction surveys.
- Implement system to determine the quality of nursing services on daily basis.
- Provide the relevant patient information and education with patients on discharge through use of Intranet and as per Doctor’s protocol/s.
- Evaluate nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes
- Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care and promote health and well
- being of patients and staff
- Ensure the principles of infection prevention and all standard precautions are adhered to
- Implementing group quality initiatives
- Manage patient’s belongings and valuables
- Motivate and maintain a positive customer service orientation with all staff
- Compile and update community resource lists
- Ensure compliance to company policies & procedures

Manage and maintain physical facility infrastructure continuously
- Review DOH and OHSC reports and compile an action plan to address and resolve any non-compliance or issues raised
- Ensure the generic OHS risk assessment has been completed and actions plans are identified to resolve any non-compliance
- Arrange monthly OHS meetings to address all risks and ensure actions plans are monitored and implemented
- Organise Theatre to ensure a therapeutic environment
- Ensure all categories of staff in Theatre, are knowledgeable, updated and implement Medicross Theatre Policies and Procedures
- Conduct Annual Training Needs Analysis as per the Workplace Skills Plan Requirement with HR
- Ensure a written daily task allocation /schedule is available in Theatre
- Ensure staff working according to scope of practic
