**Chief Compliance Officer**
**Required for a US Family Office (Private Wealth Advisory Firm)**

**Background**:
Our client is a US based family office - (Private Wealth Advisory Firm) and they have an immediate opening for an experienced attorney or compliance professional to lead the Family Office’s (FO) compliance in **Southern and Eastern Africa**. The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) will support the FO’s continuing commitment to comply with laws, regulations, and policies governing its business, finance, and accounting activities across its investments in Africa. The CCO will conduct internal investigations and provide legal advice on compliance issues and programs to various FO entities in Africa.

Responsibilities for this role will also include serving as a trusted advisor to senior leaders of the organizations, various compliance committees, providing counseling and training (ethics & integrity) to employees along with other legal and compliance functions, and working with internal stakeholders to mitigate compliance risk. Travel is required to complete certain investigations and engage with business clients and colleagues throughout the region.

The attorney will report to the FO and compliance boards. The location is flexible, but the person would be based in Johannesburg, Kigali, or Nairobi.

This is a one person Department at the moment and we are looking for an individual who has strategic expertise in Compliance frameworks, but who is also able to implement and execute the Compliance function initially.

**We Are Looking For Someone With The Following Competencies**:

- Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, communication, and interviewing skills.
- Outstanding analytical and writing ability, with a keen sense of dealing with the business data and the details of a matter.
- A firm understanding of relevant laws and regulations applicable to U.S. companies, including the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), as well as an appreciation of pertinent accounting and finance principles.
- Ability to work efficiently and independently, prioritize workflow and adjust to frequent workload fluctuations.
- Ability to analyze complex financial, business, and legal issues and communicate them in a clear and concise fashion.
- Prior experience directing internal investigations.
- AML - Anti Money Laundering Legislation experience
- CFT - Anti-Financing of Terrorism legislation
- AB&C - Anti Bribery and Corruption
- Ethics Committee reporting and experience
- Risk Testing and Advisory
- Experience with US Compliance Frameworks would be beneficial
- Financial Crimes experience
- Experience in Financial Services Legislation
- Experience in Property, Real Estate and Developments and related construction legislation would be beneficial.

**Qualifications**:

- Desired a law degree from a reputed law school. LLB
- Minimum of five years’ experience in a compliance department, international law firm, or in-house legal department, with solid Compliance experience.
- Significant experience in the areas of compliance auditing and monitoring, risk assessment, investigation, enforcement and formulation of comprehensive compliance policies, programs, and plans.
- Preferred to have strong experience in dealing with compliance and/or internal investigations in or on behalf of a multi-national company or other large complex organization.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Experience in dealing with diverse cultures preferred.
- **25-50% t**ravel required into Africa.**:

- A member of a Compliance Professional Body or Governing Body would be beneficial.
- A specific Compliance qualification would be beneficial.

**Responsibilities**:

- Development of a compliance program.
- The Compliance Program shall be based on the hallmarks of an effective compliance program that as published by the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other applicable sources of Law or guidance in the judgment of the Company.
- Develop an implementation plan for the Compliance Program, which will be presented to the advisory boards of multiple companies, and present updates on the implementation of the Compliance Program to the advisory Boards on at least a quarterly basis.
- Issue a Code of Ethics applicable to the Covered Operations that shall be available in relevant local languages.
- Foster an environment emphasizing the importance of conducting business ethically and compliance with Laws and the Company’s policies.
- Conduct compliance training for relevant personnel and business partners at FO Operations on risks relating to Anti-Corruption Laws, Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Laws, Sanctions, and any other Laws or topics deemed relevant in the judgment in the Company.
