RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:

- Online cataloguing on an Integrated Library Services Platform (OCLC WorldShare); making use of the OCLC WorldCat database to provide access to all library collections through
- original and copy cataloguing of information resources in different formats
- Application and adherence to international cataloguing and descriptive metadata standards i.e. RDA, AACR2, DDC, LCSH, MARC21 and Dublin Core
- Maintenance of UP holdings on OCLC WorldShare
- Collection and database integrity management e.g. identifying and correcting errors in the database, weeding, etc.
- Participation in Library strategic projects
- Describe and enrich content on the University’s institutional repository (UPSpace) using relevant metadata (Dublin Core)
- Professional guidance to and liaison with information specialists and other stakeholders

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- A four-year library degree e.g. Bachelor of Library and Information Science degree (B.Bibl.) or Bachelor of Information Science (BIS) plus Postgraduate Diploma in Library Information Science/Studies (PG Dip. LIS) or Bachelor of Information Honors (B. Inf (Hons)); which must include a course/module in Cataloguing.

OR
- A three-year library degree (e.g. Bachelor of Information Science (BIS));

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Decision-making skills; analytical thinking abilities; detail-oriented skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently but also in a team environment
- Ability to manage time effectively

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Knowledge of Library Technical Services work processes, environment and industry
- Knowledge of current library trends and developments
- Experience in the use and impact of technology on the information environment
- Experience with NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Programme)
- Knowledge of and experience in the cataloguing of classical and/or European languages; and/or African languages

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
